FINALS UPDATE: The Neighborhood (0.7) and The Voice (1.0) adjusted up while Dancing with the Stars (0.7) and The Good Doctor (0.4, -0.2) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The news didn't improve for last week's slow-starting newbie dramas, with NBC's Ordinary Joe (0.36) plummeting by 31% week-to-week. The Big Leap (0.25) was not down a huge percent from last week's disastrous start, but it came on a night when 9-1-1 (0.85) perked up noticeably, so its retention dropped to a horrible 29%. The best week two newbie hold was NCIS: Hawai'i (0.50) which was down just a hundredth on a steady-ish night for CBS in general.
  •  And ABC ended up with a soft night after getting slammed by preemptions in finals updates, with Dancing with the Stars (0.72) taking a big dip from last week and the season premiere of The Good Doctor (0.41) posting a new series low.

FINALS UPDATE: The Voice (1.1) adjusted up while Time100 (0.3) and The Big Leap (0.3) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Premiere Monday saw a trio of underwhelming new drama premieres. Fox's The Big Leap (0.29) fared worst out of the gate, with just 38% retention of its 9-1-1 lead-in (0.76). And it's not like this was some huge episode of 9-1-1; the show was way down from its last premiere (a 1.2 in January) and couldn't even get close to its 1.0ish level from the late spring.
  • On NBC, Ordinary Joe (0.52) was a little below 50% of its lead-in from The Voice (1.08), whose first Ariana Grande episode had the best year-to-year trend among the returnees on Premiere Monday. For Ordinary Joe, this looked pretty similar to how Bluff City Law started a couple years ago (0.81 out of a 1.7), which is not promising.
  • CBS had the first-ever timeslot move for NCIS (0.73), airing in the 9/8c hour and launching new spin-off NCIS: Hawai'i. The 70%ish retention for Hawai'i was markedly worse than the 90%ish level for the Los Angeles and New Orleans premieres, though this one did have the disadvantage of the 10/9c hour. NCIS along with its lead-in comedy hour The Neighborhood (0.63) and Bob Hearts Abishola (0.54) were all down 20%ish from last fall's premieres.
  • ABC held off for a week on the return of The Good Doctor but did have the return of Dancing with the Stars (0.92), which could not keep up with the breakout season last year but still had a better Plus than the last few premieres before that.
