Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 4/15/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • A special 9/8c tryout for Agents of SHIELD (2.1) was of some benefit, amounting to a two-tenth uptick week-to-week. That doesn't seem like much, but given what happened on the other networks... anyway, more on that in a minute. ABC also launched a new season of Celebrity Wife Swap (1.0) at a mere shadow of what the show got in the regular season last year (including a 2.4 premiere on 2/26/13). But this was pretty close to what it averaged over the summer, and sadly an improvement on almost every regularly-scheduled original in the 10/9c slot this season. (Only the premieres of Lucky 7 and Mind Games did better!)
  • The other good news was NBC's The Voice (3.0) and About a Boy (1.8) bouncing back a bit. But those really only look encouraging because they dropped so much last week.
  • Then there was everybody else, where season lows were all over the place, though many of the outright lows were adjusted away after finals. Here are the details:
    • CBS: NCIS (2.2, a low by two tenths even after a finals uptick), NCIS: Los Angeles (2.1, tie) and Person of Interest (1.8, adjusted up from a tie to not a low).
    • NBC: Chicago Fire (1.7, new low).
    • Fox: Glee (1.0, NOT A LOW!), New Girl (1.2, adjusted up to a tie), The Mindy Project (1.0, tie).
    • CW: The Originals (0.7, adjusted up to a tie), Supernatural (0.7, adjusted down to a low by two tenths).
  • FX launched new drama Fargo (0.8), which basically tied the 18-49 average of previous occupant Justified. But it was a bit below their last drama launch The Bridge (0.9 on 7/10/13), and most other recent launches of note on the network were in the 1's. This network has become somewhat famous for massive post-premiere drops, so they'll have to hope this modest premiere bucks the trend.

What happened to the viewing levels last night?! Even for spring that looks like a ridiculous drop for everyone. If that is the case, then Shield being barely up could mean a sizable increase in TRUE terms for it, no?

I think CBS will be in real trouble in a couple of years.

Generally low Tuesday numbers aside, I'm beginning to wonder if maybe Bishop has succeeded in killing NCIS. I'm aware of some sentiment against her.

If SHIELD upticks in finals as it usually has, or even just holds steady, it'll be only the fifth time this season the show has grown ep-to-ep. Considering the carnage on every other network, that's a bigger win than thought possible (even though my gut says there'll be more upticks than usual). I just find it maddening that ABC finally tries male-skewing SHIELD in the 9:00 hour to lead into a female-skewing reality show.

Does the room think this may convince ABC to keep SHIELD in the 9:00 hour next season?

It took NCIS, what, like an entire decade to get back to a 2.1
That's at least impressive

Lots of retirement age cop procedurals
on CBS with nothing fresh and creative (or more youthful
skewing) on the horizon which will ultimately come back to bite the
Crime Broadcasting Syndicate big time.

They do need to address Tuesday 9 PM hour, it's actually ruining 2 hours, 10 PM too. But I don't see what they can do. SHIELD is already bellow 2.0 most of the weeks. Resurrection probably won't fall so low ... but only because its season is so short. If they move The Middle or Modern Family there, it would only transfer problem to Wednesday..

It's all Lee's fault. 90% of shows he's picking are bombs, and other 10% look like 2 seasons and out. If they developed hit like The Blacklist they could put it there to rejuvenate Tuesday. If they developed hit comedy (or at least higher than The Middle rated), they could put it there to lead into Goldbergs or promising newbie, and boost 9-30 to 11 PM. But they have nothing.

Spot said...

Obviously it depends on how much the PUT is down, but my guess is it won't make a major True difference for SHIELD because the 9:00 hour is easier in general (higher viewing than 8:00 + NBC so much weaker).

Spot said...

It's a possibility. But then again, if their scheduling plus the brostep scandal are indicative of the overall intelligence at Disney these days, then you probably shouldn't hold your breath, dude.

It feels highly unlikely that ABC is going to move any shows currently on the air over to Tuesdays next season because of how this season was plotted (only moving The Neighbors to Fridays while putting new shows in the gaps created from 2012-2013's cancellations). Unless ABC has a radical change in mindset like moving Dancing with the Stars to Tuesdays, fully realizing a TGIF block, or filling Sunday with reality shows, it'll come down to new development. The question comes down to how they want to treat The Goldbergs: does it get a Wednesday :30 slot or will ABC try again to make it an anchor show?

Spot said...

I must agree. Then Tuesday should be:
SHIELD / new comedy (Kevin Hart or whatever) / Goldbergs / Castle

The Goldbergs is certainly not strong enough to be anchor. It's already weaker than Last Man Standing.
For that reason I would leave S.H.I.E.L.D. on 8 PM. Goldbergs leading into it wouldn't help it, and might actually hurt.
Castle is near the end of its run, so no big harm even if it's half a point down in new timeslot.
On Monday 10 PM I'd try new procedural 10 PM (Agatha?) .ABC wants to stay in procedural business after Castle dies from natural causes. Then why not start looking for replacement already now?
Wednesday two new comedies, as always, plus something high-profile at 10 PM. Perhaps Clementine?
Thursday, new Shonda's drama. Somewhere. Where Shonda likes it to be.
Suburgatory at Friday 8:30 PM. It skews much older than Goldbergs. Who'd thunk it before season start?
Sunday same. Resurrection in fall schedule while it still has some fire in it. Use Oscars for promoting The Club, or Secrets & Lies... whatever, just don't waste promos on veteran drama like Resurrection.

I think CBS is in real trouble NOW. It just doesn't look as bad because FOX and NBC are doing so much worse. That early renewal for The Following looks worse as the weeks go on.

Spot said...

Really? NBC isn't doing THAT bad. Yeah, it only has Voice, Blacklist, Chicago Fire, and football keeping them afloat, but last year had only Voice and football...still pathetic, but baby steps.

Spot said...

Update after adjustments. If before the season began, someone had speculated that Shield would be only a tenth off NCIS, it would have been completely believable. But I would have thought more NCIS 3.2 and Shield 3.1, not an entire ratings point lower!

Spot said...

That makes sense yeah

Spot said...

I agree. NBC looks bad because of their Thursdays but they win Mondays, Tuesdays and Sundays (Sundays if you do whole year averages I am sure Sunday Night Football inflates it enough to call them the winners), they are competitive on Fridays and do okay on Wednesdays. It's really Thursdays that are their main issue. Otherwise Sunday Night Football, The Voice, The Blacklist, Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, SVU, Grimm, Dateline and The Biggest Looser are all solid.

Spot said...

I believe only 5 dramas have maintained a 2.3 for every episode this season: Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Scandal, Grey's Anatomy, Blacklist.
So: supernatural for cable, Shonda for ABC work well.

Spot said...

I don't think so. She's been there for a while, and the drop from high-2/low-3 to happened after a weird two-week break during sweeps.

Spot said...

Thoughts on Fargo: Ouch. I wonder, perhaps, if the shine is coming off FX for their new stuff, the same way AMC can't launch anything anymore.

Spot said...

I assumed Fargo did well. Don't most cable shows do around CW numbers...Big 4 CW numbers?

Spot said...

Honestly, many (including myself) have become used to hyped-up FX shows hanging a 1+ in their debut, as Spot pointed out. So, the fact that this failed to do so means it didn't start out as well as might be hoped. Also, I'm just feeling a certain amount of negative momentum on the FX stuff since the last few have ringed in behind the stuff that came before.

Spot said...

I think F/X's drama problem is its desire to feel mature and old in its content. Fargo's based on a nearly 20 year old movie. The Americans is a spy drama set in the 1980s. And Justified hasn't taken off as big as it could have due to Western influences. Sons of Anarchy (unabashed in its gritty extremism) and American Horror Story (which, with its anthology structure, has fixed Ryan Murphy's perpetual problem of his shows burning out after 2 or so seasons) look to be current exceptions to the rule.

Spot said...

FX airs a lot of movies. I wonder how many people assumed it was just a rerun of Fargo movie.
I was aware of this series, but solely because every day I visit Deadline site to check which old shows are cancelled, and which are ordered to first/new season.

Spot said...

Sons ot Anarchy had 1 2.2, otherwise it would be included too.

Spot said...

I've heard that for five straight seasons.

Spot said...

I sense an uptick for Fargo next week.
