Spotted Ratings, Friday 4/18/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Once again, NBC's Hannibal (0.8) actually seemed to benefit from airing after Dateline (1.2) rather than Grimm, though after a finals downtick it was up just a tenth week-to-week.
  • After premiering well last week, Kitchen Nightmares (1.0 at 8:00, 0.9 at 9:00) was down two ticks in each hour.
  • ABC's Last Man Standing and Shark Tank each adjusted up off of would-be new lows to just tie for lows. But 20/20 (1.8) had a strange spike at 10/9c.

Hannibal benefiting from Dateline makes so sense. It skews over 20% older

Spot suggested Dateline's true-crime angle was a better pairing than Grimm's supernatural one, and this does seem the best explanation. Could Grimm work at 8 in a flip with Dateline?

Hannibal isn't really worth enough in first run ratings to justify moving things around. It's funny because a lot of Hannibal fans would consider themselves too good for something like Dateline

Or at the very least, the vocal ones would.

If I'm NBC and I want a third season of Hannibal, I'd actually have it share the 9:00 timeslot with Grimm: two 11-episode runs of Grimm in the Fall & Spring, with Hannibal in the Winter.

It would be weird to air Dateline at 8 and then at 10 again IMO. I don't really think the 0.2 or so tents that would change for Hannibal would be worth NBC changing any plans they might have

NBC did OK with scheduling Hannibal. Thursday 10 PM, against soapy, female-oriented Scandal, and whatever cop procedural CBS is having there - it's best to put some serialized genre show there.
Only problem was Hannibal ratings were not good. So they renewed it for Friday as a summer/late-spring, cheap, (basically) import show. Something went wrong with Crossbones, so it ended in a midseason schedule after all. Ratings are still low, but not much lower than it were during back end of Season 1. Then I expect NBC to renew it... but for *summer* 2015.

Back to Thursday 10 PM. I think in fall NBC should try again something hannibalish there, some not-female-oriented serialized drama (let's call it NFOSD). I think NBC Thursday should be:
8 PM: Maya Rudolph variety show
9 PM niche comedies (perhaps Tooken / Parks & Recreation)
10 PM NFOSD

Cheap stuff + critically aclaimed + counterprogramming. Meaning: let's fortify Mon to Wed first, and deal with Thursdays only after new dramas (CHI x 2 + Blacklist) are at 88 episodes (or at least close to it). Those dramas are still vulnerable, and must be protected. Plus they should move one comedy block from Thursday, CBS is killing them at 8 PM. I'd like they move that block to Wednesday 8 PM, but just move it already, NBC, anywhere at Tue or Wed is better than where it is now.

Other options for Thursday are:
light drama / niche comedies / Maya Rudolph
The Biggest Loser / niche comedies / Maya Rudolph
The Biggest Loser / niche comedies / NFOSD
light drama / niche comedies / NFOSD

But I'd really like them to move The Biggest Loser to midseason, and also to order 13 episodes of Parenthood final season for spackle. Thus they would have two proven backups for failures at Mon to Thu schedule. And if there would be only one hole to fix, then they can always burn off Parenthood at post-NFL Sundays 10 PM.
One more thing. They'll have new drama on Monday 10, and if Dracula is not coming back, then there will be one more drama premiere at Friday 10 PM. I think in that scenario it's out of question they would premiere two more new dramas on Thursday. It's not coincidence I put that option as the last one in my list above, I think two new dramas at Thursday is a stretch in any case.
