Spotted Ratings, Thursday 4/24/14

WHAT MATTERS:

  • CBS had a relatively respectable start out of late April throwaway Bad Teacher (2.1), more than 20% above what had become the recent 1.7 level for previous occupant The Crazy Ones and just 16% behind lead-in Two and a Half Men (2.5). Let's not get carried away here; it's still a typical 20% drop away from being in TCO territory and thus probably on the wrong side of the bubble. But if it overachieves that standard, it may actually become something the network should think about as upfronts loom.
  • ABC also had a series premiere, medical drama Black Box (1.5). That was roughly a third behind Grey's Anatomy (2.3), which slumped on the first Thursday after Scandal's finale. Were this a normal in-season premiere, things would look quite rough for Black Box, but it'll ultimately be judged by much more lenient summer co-production standards, so it's probably too early for definitive judgments.
  • The other networks kicked off May sweeps in soft fashion, though The Vampire Diaries (0.8) and Reign (0.5) each inched back up for the CW. And NBC sent off Parks and Recreation (1.0) in a one-hour season finale, with the biggest notable there being the promo guy saying at the end of the finale that it's coming back in the fall.

Big Bang's 4.3 is unusually low.

Got to love ABC's PR spin: 'Black Box' Opens as ABC's Most-Watched 10pm Drama Debut Since 'Nashville' in October 2012

Bad Teacher had much more initial interest than I thought. Maybe CBS comedy should have been different all along. Maybe something like Mother/TCO/Broke Girls/Bad Teacher on Mondays and TBBT/Friends with Better Lives/Two and a Half Men/Mom on Thursdays.

By the way, GA's numbers probably strengthen the idea that a net's overall numbers for the night do matter for individual show's numbers. It's not all about the lead-in as it is about the lead-out. I think that's an effect worth looking at. It's also the same effect that often leads to flops on the same night becoming even bigger flops.

I still believe CBS should have premiered Bad Teacher in place of We Are Men. It would have been a nice fit with both HIMYM and 2 Broke Girls.

If it had succeeded, CBS could have moved the solid-but-old-skewing Mike & Molly to Friday.

I don't think this is in anyway a trend, but I think this the closest Big Bang and Modern Family have been all year. Without finals they are .8 apart. I think the second week of January they were something like 2.2 apart, with a 3.5 and 5.7 each. Again, not a trend as Modern Family is a lot more down than Big Bang

I think CBS would have avoided putting Mike & Molly on Friday. It could have been used to fill in an hour with its 22 episode order. Like pulling Hostages early and having back to back Mike & Molly's air there, filling in Survivor's slot during the season break, filling in HIMYM's slot after it had its finale.

You're assuming that Mike & Molly moving to Friday would been undesirable, though. Mike & Molly would have done well for CBS on Friday and would have opened up a low-priority slot for keeping comedies alive for syndication purposes.

It depends at the where though. If it was at 9 after Undercover Boss only having to face low rated FOX sitcoms, I think it would have been a potentially good move. If it was at 8 against similar skewing Last Man Standing, I don't think so

Spot, how does the premiere of Black Box stack up in plus compared to the Scandal premiere 2 years ago. Some VERY rough math here makes me think Scandal premiered to around an 85 in plus out of a 125 Grey's Anatomy. Black Box did around an 80 out of a 120 Grey's Anatomy. Can you give me the actual plus scores?

Spot said...

Scandal had an 85 out of a 118 Grey's. Black Box would be a 78 out of a 120 Grey's right now, will probably end up at like 79/122.
