Spotted Ratings, Monday 4/7/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • CBS dominated Monday with the NCAA basketball national championship game. The final was a 7.2 A18-49 rating, down 14% from last year.
  • NBC tried American Dream Builders (1.5) after The Voice (3.5) in an academically interesting test of what a really low-rated show would do with this kind of timeslot upgrade. While the show more than doubled its rating from Sunday, this tryout will need to make a difference in next Sunday's rating to not have been a waste.
  • On a night otherwise light on original entertainment programming, Bones (1.6) inched up for the second straight week. Dancing with the Stars (2.2) was the only show to take a hit against the big game, but it was just a tenth after finals. It remains a pretty good season for the show; this was actually slightly above last year's rating on this night.

The Voice sure got past its peak much faster than Idol did. A lot of people would point to the show being on both fall and spring, but I wonder if the #s would be pretty much the same right now even if that weren't the case...

I thought the "academically interesting test of what a really low-rated show would do with this kind of timeslot upgrade" was last year's series finale of The New Normal. This move was about saving an episode of The Blacklist from going against the NCAA game instead of pumping up ADB; NBC tries to avoid using the post-Voice slots to air a rerun.

If you look at half hours, DWTS and Voice are actually higher against the game. And last year The Voice and Revolution went up against the game

It's actually also to help fill gaps where they'd have to run Blacklist repeats, which would probably be lower-rated that even what American Dream Builders hung in the slot, at least based on some of the Blacklist repeats from earlier in the year. Although we'll get a chance to see the other side of that coin next week, when they do run a Blacklist repeat after The Voice.

You know it is bad when even if you include your post super bowl airing you are still down year to year!

I agree with other comments that American Dream Builders was preservation of Blacklist original (and repeat) episodes against a potent NCAA finals (although the Castle repeat ratings were surprisingly robust). Additionally, NBC probably commanded slightly
higher ad rates for this new reality show episode following their powerhouse Monday Voice than it can actually command airing in its regular Sunday spot where it is dying a quick death, along with NBC's entire Sunday lineup. There could be a Saturday burn-off future awaiting American Dream Builders (where ad rates are as about as low as they go).

NBC won't mind if they can have a slower decline than Idol. :)
