Spotted Ratings, Sunday 4/20/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • After a promising start to the spring, it seems to be falling apart in April for Once Upon a Time (1.7), down another three tenths week-to-week and now down seven tenths over the last two weeks. But after seeing the week-to-week HUT decline on Easter Sunday, it seems a bit more reasonable. It also had a much worse lead-in than usual from a Peanuts Easter special (0.9), and the network had low-rated Hallmark Hall of Fame movie In My Dreams from 9-11 (1.0, down 23% from the April movie last year).
  • The absence of Resurrection at 9/8c may have been of some benefit to the competition, as NBC's Believe (1.1) was up a tick. It also had a better lead-in from Dateline (0.8), even if its flip to 8/7c with American Dream Builders (0.5) at 7/6c didn't net any growth over the first two hours. And Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey (1.4) also had its first week-to-week growth despite the animated lead-in going into repeats.
  • CBS was on the downswing across the board with The Amazing Race (1.7), The Good Wife (1.3) and The Mentalist (1.4).
  • Cable also had some Easter ugliness:
    • HBO's comedies Silicon Valley and Veep each dropped over a tenth despite a slightly up lead-in from Game of Thrones.
    • AMC also had a brutal Easter, with Turn and Mad Men each shedding over two tenths.
    • And Lifetime had a relatively soft return from Devious Maids; though this was above the also soft series premiere, that show grew substantially over the course of season one and ended on a 1.14, so returning at 0.75 is probably not what Lifetime was looking for.
    • Salem, WGN America's first foray into scripted originals, pulled a 0.51 demo, which is massive by that network's standards but not by most networks'.

The Charlie Brown Special was up 50% year to year. Last year's .6 was bad enough to question why ABC didn't just go AFV (R) in that slot, but it's .9 is probably better than what an AFV (R) would have done.
.
The most startling stat is Bob's Burgers .6 rating for a new episode! The worst Cleveland did was a .8 with a basically unannounced 7 pm airing. In comparison, last Easter a Bob's Burgers REPEAT at the same time had a .6 and more viewers than an original last year

Despite getting rid of American Dad and replacing it with Bordertown, I'm almost sure FOX won't keep Bob's Burgers after 2015 since it is their lowest rated animation.

Yet it moved to 7 PM to make room for Cosmos, this situation screams Futurama all over it, it reaches syndication next season, so, FOX will yank it from the schedule, which is kind of curious, since it skews younger and even its non-NFL airing are on pair with most of FOX mon-thu shows.

Honestly, Futurama is not the best example. King of the Hill got the worst treatment of any of their animated comedies, despite it being a long runner that always gave solid ratings.
.
If last year 1.6 million Bob's Burgers fans could find an unpromoted 7 pm repeat of their show on Easter (even going against NCAA overrun), there is no excuse for for less showing up this year for an original

I feel like it's worth bringing up that, per Deadline, that number puts Salem ahead of the series premiere numbers of certain other network scripted initiative launch shows, like Mad Men. Which means that on premiere night, at least, witches and Seth Gabel munching everything in sight, beats restrained subtlety. (although I don't know how many people will be back - it wasn't batshit enough, believe it or not)
