Spotted Ratings, Monday 4/28/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Week three of CBS Monday's post-How I Met Your Mother existence saw multi-tick upswings for all three originals, 2 Broke Girls (2.3), Friends with Better Lives (1.9) and Mike and Molly (2.2). For FWBL, though the slot got a bit easier with Bones in repeats, this two-tenth growth makes it look like roughly a Mom-esque performer.  If the decision on this show is actually still up for grabs, that might make its situation more interesting. We'll see if it can sustain it next week (the last point that could conceivably affect an upfront decision).
  • Fox had the season finale of The Following (1.5), with the show barely inching off of the 1.4 it's gotten for the last six weeks. This looks a tad more favorable since Bones (0.9) was in repeats, but it's obviously a very far cry from the 2.7 that wrapped up last season.
  • A major two-tenth upward adjustment left Dancing with the Stars (2.6) up 18% week-to-week, tying the premiere's rating as a season high, and an astounding 24% ahead of the same night last year. Though the HUT seemed rather high on this night in general (hence so many week-to-week growths), this is a big deal for a show that was already having a really good season.

I think last week and this week show The Blacklist and Voice continue to operate seperately. Last week was a big game changing promoted episode that stayed solid against the Voice falling. The Voice inched up (always does in finals) and it was down a tick as it wasn't as big of an episode. I don't think their relationship is quite Dancing/Castle and definitely not Survivor/Criminal Mind that seem to operate completely opposite of eachother. I'm think more Idol/House where the lead out will always do better with the big lead in, but is still a big hit for the network when the lead in isn't around.

I know it isn't by a significant amount, but did Mike & Molly just skew YOUNGER than 2 Broke Girls? I can't think of a single time that has ever happened before. Damn Friends with Better Lives is definitely way ahead of Crazy Ones for renewal, even though the quality is miles apart. We don't have enough data on Bad Teacher to make a call yet. Speaking of which, with Two and a Half Men ending a week earlier than TBBT, it seems they're double pumping Bad Teacher into the Elementary finale

I agree with what you say except anything about Elementary ratings being beast. They are marginal at best, though I think this season is better than last year because last year it really wasted its compatible POI lead in. It also wasted the two larger than POI lead ins it had with the Superbowl (starting so late isn't all its fault) and that 3.7 Big Bang Theory repeat only saw a 2.0 finale. I agree, not lead in dependent, but not beast either

When I say "beast" I don't mean something that's a powerhouse. It's a show that marches to the beat of its own drummer, and it's a mid-tempo beat at best.

DWTS adjusted up 0.2 in finals and at 0.4 from the voice. Wow. If anyone had told me that in the fall I wouldn't have believed it. I thought the show was dead

Pretty much like The Bachelor a few years back; seemed like it would be dead, and then BOOM, growth. Maybe not as drastic here, but its still positive.

Episode number 7 for Mondays (4/29) is listed twice in the table.

I'm amazed that Dancing with the Stars is currently running even to slightly ahead of both Spring 2013 and Fall 2013 seasons even though both of those editions had the inflated, Voice-free premieres. Is the casting that much better this cycle? Is the new co-host more appealing?

In terms of scheduling, here's what I see. All of the remaining shows will all be canceled. In scheduling Thursdays, it's clear Big Bang and Elementary, with their big episode counts, will be moving to Mondays for the weeks TFN will be on. Big Bang will either boost up 2 Broke Girls to anchor status again, support HIMYD, or give love to a sophmore Mom. Mike & Molly, and either NCIS: LA or POI are held back and return in November. With that Big Bang and Elementary will return to Thursday, and Big Bang will give a boost to CBS's most promising comedy, whether it be McCarthys, Gaffigan, or Odd Couple, with 2.5 Men and Millers following it, and ending the night with Elementary. Yeah, there's a ton to promote, but if there's good sampling, everything will be fine.

It's funny. All I heard at the beginning of the season was how bad the cast was, and how much the show was going to dip. It's held pretty firm. Back when they had Kirstie Alley, Bristol Palin and Emmitt Smith on for the All-Stars season they were hemorrhaging viewers.

With Almost Human now reported canceled, I can't wait to see how the final Power Ratings update compares it to The Following.

Am I the only one who thinks that they will keep Big Bang on Mondays? Why would the network known for not making the extra move suddenly do it with their highest-rated comedy? Why launch a comedy block in November? Are they going to try to have four hours of comedy with only two and a half anchors?

Spot said...

Spot said above: "And a move to Monday would probably hurt Thursday more than staying would hurt Monday. After all, Thursday may soon have to deal with losing Two and a Half Men as well."

And that's it. Only I would say "surely" instead of "probably".

And the root of the problem is well known: CBS has no good anchors for comedy blocks besides TBBT. That's the sole reason they'll move it twice next fall. Had they have some anchors, they would either premiere it in November on Thursday, either move it to Monday permanently.

Spot said...

I understand that such a move would hurt Thursday. My problem with that thinking is this: It stretches what little comedy juice they have too thin. What I'm saying isn't "move BBT, then stick Mike and Molly with some newbie you they don't like on Thursday". What I'm saying is they need to go back down to two hours of comedy. BBT/NEW/2.5/NEW. 2BG and M&M on emergency spackle duty. If 2 1/2 is getting only a shortened final season, then debut 2BG in its place in February.

My other problem is the blithe way people are reacting to moving the most popular show on the network to a different day and time in the middle of the fall. Is there no concern that people will be confused by a big push in September to watch BBT on Monday and then a month later an even bigger push to watch Thursday?

Spot said...

It's about what's best for the network, not what's best for the TBBT. They're happy with TBBT losing 0.5 rating points, if it prevents other shows losing combined 1.0 points.
