Spotted Ratings, Olympics Roundup 2/12-2/17/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Through 2/17, the 2014 Winter Olympics average is running 13% behind the 2010 average over the same span. Most individual days have been relatively close to that trend, with a couple major exceptions to the positive (Tuesday 2/11 and Monday 2/17 were both up vs. the corresponding 2010 days) and a couple major exceptions to the negative (Wednesday 2/12 and Saturday 2/15 were each down about 40%, failing to grow on days when the 2010 Games had huge spikes). 2014 is running closer to the corresponding 2006 average (-4%), which may be a fairer comparison due to time zone differences.
  • There was little excitement in the entertainment programming world from Wednesday to Sunday, but here are a few quick notes:
    • The Wednesday edition of American Idol (3.4) dropped by 13% from the previous non-Olympic Wednesday. This isn't that surprising a percentage drop when compared to other shows that aired against the Games, but we must also bake in the fact that Idol would be dropping at this time of year even under normal circumstances. So Idol's first Olympic week was actually not that bad on a year-to-year basis, especially compared to the opening weeks of its season. Wednesday was down 21% and Thursday at just -19%.
    • The biggest overachiever of the week? Might've actually been Super Fun Night (1.3), one of the few shows to show no real erosion against the Games. It matched its last episode after a Modern repeat, even though said Modern repeat was three ticks lower than two weeks ago. This might have actually been a somewhat bubble-worthy performance. But even if so, it's the show's first bubble-ish performance in about ten episodes. That isn't gonna cut it.
    • On Sunday, The Walking Dead (6.8) was down over 15% in week two. A week after the premiere virtually tied the fall premiere's series high, this episode went three tenths behind fall's week two. The rest of Sunday cable did pretty well against the Games; the NBA's All-Star Game (3.3) was only barely down year-to-year, while True Detective (0.9) and Shameless (0.9) each hit their best numbers in a few weeks.
