Cablemetrics: American Gods, Famous in Love, Better Call Saul

These numbers are current through Monday, May 1.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • American Gods, the latest from Bryan Fuller, premiered on Starz to a 0.36, in a dead heat with The Leftovers for the premium. Power it is not, but that was close to the last Outlander premiere (0.39) from about a year ago.

Cablemetrics: The Leftovers, Veep, Doctor Who, Better Call Saul

These numbers are current through Monday, April 17.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • HBO will have to wait longer than usual for its Game of Thrones return, which would usually come about this time of year. But the network got some good news on a much smaller scale as the return of acclaimed drama The Leftovers (0.39) was up by six hundredths from its last premiere back in October 2015.

Cablemetrics: Better Call Saul, Archer, Angie Tribeca, Into the Badlands

These numbers are current through Monday, April 10.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • AMC's Better Call Saul (0.70) returned on Monday and clearly remains a part of the cable elite. But like the season two premiere, it opened on a new series low; it was nearly a tenth below last season's low point and 34% behind last season's opener.

Cablemetrics: Big Little Lies, The Walking Dead, Into the Badlands

These numbers are current through Monday, April 3.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • HBO's Big Little Lies finished out its The Night Of-like trajectory with a new series high at 0.66, over a tenth above its previous peak. Both of the HBO minis shook off an early stinker result, slowly inched up during the mid-section of the season, and ended on three consecutive new series highs.

Cablemetrics: Big Little Lies, Into the Badlands, The Walking Dead

These numbers are current through Monday, March 27.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Big Little Lies (0.54) rose to another new series high on Sunday, up by a full tenth from last week. AMC also had a nice Sunday with The Walking Dead (4.88) and week two of Into the Badlands (1.49) both on the upswing.

Cablemetrics: Into the Badlands, Big Little Lies, The Arrangement, Underground

These numbers are current through Monday, March 20.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • After 15 months off, AMC's sophomore drama Into the Badlands returned with a 1.42 demo rating, retaining less than a third of its lead-in from The Walking Dead (4.72). That's a far cry from the November 2015 series premiere (3.15) as well as the other two episodes that aired after The Walking Dead (2.27 & 2.46). Of course, Dead itself was getting much bigger raw ratings back then (with a 6.51, 6.65 and 7.02 in those weeks). Like last year, Badlands will get three weeks of The Walking Dead as a lead-in before setting out on its own.

Cablemetrics: Into the Badlands, Homeland, The Affair, The Expanse

These numbers are current through Wednesday, December 23.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Had some earlier Twitter thoughts on finale Sunday for Showtime and AMC.

Cablemetrics: The Expanse, The Magicians, Into the Badlands, Fargo

These numbers are current through Thursday, December 17.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • This week saw Syfy use its three-night miniseries Childhood's End (0.43 -> 0.31 -> 0.33) as a lead-in for previews of its new drama series. On Monday and Tuesday, it was space opera The Expanse (0.33 -> 0.27), which will actually continue airing on Tuesdays through the holidays and into the winter. Wednesday brought The Magicians (0.26), which was more of a true "special preview" situation as it's not airing again until late January. At least so far, despite what seems like a bigger money investment, there's little indication that these will be the shows to get the channel out of its rut of 0.2-0.3 same-day ratings for dramas.

Cablemetrics: Into the Badlands, Homeland, The Leftovers

These numbers are current through Thursday, December 10.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The week's most interesting point probably belonged once again to Into the Badlands (1.06), which got its first look at life without The Walking Dead. Though it was down 57% from the previous airing after the TWD finale, 1.06 is still a really good same-day number by today's standards. If it can stay anywhere close to this in the last two episodes, it's gotta be back.

Cablemetrics: The Walking Dead, Into the Badlands, Unforgettable

These numbers are current through Thursday, December 3.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The Walking Dead finished out the first half of season six with a 6.65 on November 22 and a 7.02 finale on November 29. Dead never had a positive year-to-year point in this half-season, but beyond the first couple weeks it was very healthy. The finale was just 7% below last fall.

Monday, November 23, 2015

Cablemetrics: Into the Badlands, The Royals, The Bastard Executioner, Fargo

These numbers are current through Thursday, November 19.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • It was a legitimately impressive start for new The Walking Dead lead-out Into the Badlands (3.15), retaining 48% of its lead-in from The Walking Dead (6.51). This was better retention than the Better Call Saul pilot had (3.43 with a 7.96 lead-in), and only a handful of Talking Dead episodes historically have done better.
