The Magicians
Wednesdays, 10/9c, Syfy
These numbers are current through Monday, February 6.
WHAT MATTERS:
- After its breakthrough season two premiere, The Magicians (0.37) took a 29% drop in week two. A drop of that size is never a good thing, but 0.37 still puts it at the high end of its season one ratings.
These numbers are current through Monday, January 30.
WHAT MATTERS:
- Last week brought a rare moment of triumph for Syfy, as sophomore drama The Magicians returned at a new series high 0.52. This kind of number has been unheard of in recent years on the channel. The last time Syfy hit this raw number with a scripted series was back in fall 2014 by wrestling lead-out Z Nation, and I'm not sure how far back you'd have to go for a comparable A18-49+. (Looks like even early episodes of Warehouse 13 would not qualify.)
These numbers are current through Monday, April 11.
WHAT MATTERS:
- The Walking Dead universe showed at least a little mortality as Fear the Walking Dead
opened season two with a 3.08 in the 9/8c hour. It's still a massive number (would qualify as a megahit by A18-49+ standards), but down 38% from its series premiere late last summer, and 0.23
points behind its previous series low.
- Another interesting note about FTWD is the fact that the Fear edition of after-show Talking Dead had relatively bad retention: its 1.05 rating was just 35% of the Fear rating. Compare this to the most recent spring episodes of the Walking Dead mothership: Talking Dead averaged 40% retention, did much better than that (46%/44%) for the premiere and finale respectively, and never did worse than 37%. I'm probably reading too much into this, but it seems like a potential red flag for the engagement level in the show. We'll see if it improves going forward.
These numbers are current through Thursday, January 28.
WHAT MATTERS:
- Might newbie The Magicians finally be the Syfy drama to break through its recent sub-0.3 ceiling? The show had a nice start by Syfy standards, with a 0.39/0.41 for its two-hour opener on Monday. (The first half of that premiere previewed back in December with a 0.26, but I will count this Monday 9/8c airing as the "official" one since it was so much higher.)
The Magicians
Mondays, 9/8c, Syfy
These numbers are current through Thursday, December 17.
WHAT MATTERS:
-
This week saw Syfy use its three-night miniseries Childhood's End (0.43 -> 0.31 -> 0.33) as a lead-in for previews of its new drama series. On Monday and Tuesday, it was space opera The Expanse (0.33 -> 0.27), which will actually continue airing on Tuesdays through the holidays and into the winter. Wednesday brought The Magicians (0.26), which was more of a true "special preview" situation as it's not airing again until late January. At least so far, despite what seems like a bigger money investment, there's little indication that these will be the shows to get the channel out of its rut of 0.2-0.3 same-day ratings for dramas.
