WHAT MATTERS:
- Like Veep last Sunday, Silicon Valley took a big hit in the absence of the Game of Thrones halo, down 58% year-to-year in its season four premiere. Still, 0.44 left it as the highest-rated original in this new HBO lineup, building on The Leftovers (which was down to 0.34 but is still having a big growth season overall). Veep held last week's 0.27.

WHAT MATTERS:

This week saw Syfy use its three-night miniseries Childhood's End (0.43 -> 0.31 -> 0.33) as a lead-in for previews of its new drama series. On Monday and Tuesday, it was space opera The Expanse (0.33 -> 0.27), which will actually continue airing on Tuesdays through the holidays and into the winter. Wednesday brought The Magicians (0.26), which was more of a true "special preview" situation as it's not airing again until late January. At least so far, despite what seems like a bigger money investment, there's little indication that these will be the shows to get the channel out of its rut of 0.2-0.3 same-day ratings for dramas.

WHAT MATTERS:

It was a legitimately impressive start for new The Walking Dead lead-out Into the Badlands (3.15), retaining 48% of its lead-in from The Walking Dead (6.51). This was better retention than the Better Call Saul pilot had (3.43 with a 7.96 lead-in), and only a handful of Talking Dead episodes historically have done better.

WHAT MATTERS:
- Some of last week's brutal drops had some nice redemption this week. Start at the top with The Walking Dead (6.69), recouping a half-point to go just three tenths below the year-ago evening. Homeland bounced all the way back to tie the season premiere and was actually up vs. week four last year, while its sophomore lead-out The Affair (0.23) tied a series high (and remains the only currently airing show in the table below with a green year-to-year trend!). FX's Fargo (0.42) also reclaimed the vast majority of last week's enormous post-premiere drop.

WHAT MATTERS:
- There weren't a lot of big premieres this week, but several of the top shows early in their fall seasons took larger-than-usual drops. Mentioned last week that American Horror Story (1.67) had a big drop in week two, but it was about in line with what the series usually does. Going down another 28% in week three? Not so much. So after the first two points were -4% and -5% year-to-year, this one was -24%. It could be in very low-1's territory sooner rather than later.

WHAT MATTERS:
- Hard to be too critical of these numbers, but it was the first The Walking Dead season premiere to not
set a new series high, averaging 14.63 million viewers and a 7.43
A18-49 rating. Both of these figures were about 15% below last year's
premiere. (But of course, they were about 50% ahead of Empire, which is about 100% ahead of any other drama currently on air, so it's all relative...)
