War of 18-49 Updates for Cable 2017: Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Pretty Little Liars and more!

Here's a quick catch-up on War of 18-49 pages for cable shows that have already existing War pages. Click the names in each one of these tables to see the now-updated War of 18-49 page. The last version of this was 11 months ago, so we're covering seasons that have concluded since then. (I'm gonna try to start doing these more frequently so that these pages don't go many months without updates.) See also last week's summer broadcast update.

Cablemetrics: Better Call Saul, Archer, Angie Tribeca, Into the Badlands

These numbers are current through Monday, April 10.

WHAT MATTERS:

• AMC's Better Call Saul (0.70) returned on Monday and clearly remains a part of the cable elite. But like the season two premiere, it opened on a new series low; it was nearly a tenth below last season's low point and 34% behind last season's opener.

Cablemetrics: Greenleaf, Baby Daddy, Young and Hungry, Feud: Bette and Joan

These numbers are current through Wednesday, March 15.

WHAT MATTERS:

• OWN's summer success Greenleaf returned in the spring, and the result was a new series low 0.48 and 43% behind its June 2016 series premiere (though that's still near the top of scripted cable this week).

WHAT MATTERS:

• The Sunday after the Oscars brought fairly mixed news to the broadcasters, but on cable it was mostly positive:

WHAT MATTERS:

• History gave its strong Vikings lead-in (0.71) to another scripted series, a new Navy SEAL drama called Six (0.48). Vikings only has a couple more episodes remaining, so Six will have several weeks to show what it can do without that lead-in.

WHAT MATTERS:

• We talked about broadcast shows getting hurt by the last-minute NFL playoff game on Sunday, but Showtime is probably hoping that applied to Homeland (0.31) as well. If not, the show was down 45% year-to-year in the same-day ratings, which is probably not what the network was looking for out of the first episode of a three-season renewal.

War of 18-49 Update, Homeland (Fall 2015)

Let's take a look at the fall 2015 season (the fifth overall) of Homeland on Showtime.

WHAT MATTERS:

• Had some earlier Twitter thoughts on finale Sunday for Showtime and AMC.

These numbers are current through Thursday, December 10.

WHAT MATTERS:

• The week's most interesting point probably belonged once again to Into the Badlands (1.06), which got its first look at life without The Walking Dead. Though it was down 57% from the previous airing after the TWD finale, 1.06 is still a really good same-day number by today's standards. If it can stay anywhere close to this in the last two episodes, it's gotta be back.

WHAT MATTERS:

• Some of last week's brutal drops had some nice redemption this week. Start at the top with The Walking Dead (6.69), recouping a half-point to go just three tenths below the year-ago evening. Homeland bounced all the way back to tie the season premiere and was actually up vs. week four last year, while its sophomore lead-out The Affair (0.23) tied a series high (and remains the only currently airing show in the table below with a green year-to-year trend!). FX's Fargo (0.42) also reclaimed the vast majority of last week's enormous post-premiere drop.

WHAT MATTERS:

• There weren't a lot of big premieres this week, but several of the top shows early in their fall seasons took larger-than-usual drops. Mentioned last week that American Horror Story (1.67) had a big drop in week two, but it was about in line with what the series usually does. Going down another 28% in week three? Not so much. So after the first two points were -4% and -5% year-to-year, this one was -24%. It could be in very low-1's territory sooner rather than later.

WHAT MATTERS:

• American Horror Story opened the Hotel edition with a 2.99, ever so slightly below the last two season premieres (3.11 last year and 3.05 in 2013). In a cable world where the median decline is still somewhere in the -20s, that's great news.

A Mostly Quiet First Season

Despite a good lead-in, Showtime's drama Homeland started out with very little interest: just 1.082 million viewers and a 0.4 demo on 10/2/11, retaining well less than half of its Dexter lead-in (1.1) in the demo. The show held at a 0.4 for the next month, a number that looked marginally better as Dexter dipped below 1.0. And as Dexter picked back up a bit in the second half of the season, so did Homeland; it hit its first 0.5 in episode six, then a 0.6 the next week. After a few more 0.4's and 0.5's, it ended the season with its most promising point: 1.705 million viewers and a 0.7 for the season finale, marking its best-yet retention of Dexter (2.230m and 1.0).

Huge Sophomore Bounce

Homeland followed through on its late season one promise in season two. There have been many crazy sophomore bounces in the age of cable drama, but Homeland's 78% growth in season two is one of the biggest, riding a lot of awards love and an improved Dexter lead-in. Four of the first five Homeland season two episodes marked new series highs, and it hit another one late in the year with a 0.97 on 12/2/12 (which remains the series high).

The growth stopped there (as did much of the critical love). But considering it lost Dexter as a lead-in and moved to 9/8c to launch new series, season three can probably still be called a pretty strong effort. The show dropped 9%, settling around 0.7 for most of the season before spiking to 0.94 for the finale.

Season Four Disappointment and Season Five Redemption

The dreams of Homeland becoming a Dexter-sized player are probably pretty much gone now, as Homeland took a big 27% dip to a 0.55 average in season four. And after rising to roughly match the winter Showtime offering Shameless in seasons two and three, Homeland dipped well behind Shameless in the 2014-15 season. So while this show had that familiar sophomore spark, it's not been able to continue that growth, as peers like The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones and Sons of Anarchy certainly have. However, the series had a much healthier season five, dropping just 9% for the second time in three seasons. It was down 15% in its 2017 season, but that was still enough for another uptick on a historical-adjusted basis.
