ABC tried to wake up its Thursday lineup by replacing Doctor Odyssey with a 9-1-1 spin-off, but Nashville showed little sign of moving the needle early on. Its 0.29 premiere was way below Odyssey's 0.40, but it did hold up better later in the fall and ended the period with narrowly better retention overall.

ABC broke with its recent winter Thursday tradition of giving the drama lineup a three-month hiatus, instead getting the fall trio back on the air throughout January. It was the first time Grey's Anatomy aired a January episode since 2020. While the 9-1-1's kept chugging along, Grey's looked particularly weak in this period before rallying in the spring.

The 9-1-1 mothership couldn't recapture last spring's heat, making for some ugly year-to-year comparisons in the first hour, but Nashville's stronger post-premiere hold compared with Odyssey became clear.

9-1-1: Two years in a row with sizable drops following a seven-year run of relative stability, which is kinda disappointing considering how well it seemed to be doing last spring. Grade: C.

9-1-1: Nashville: Finished a bit below Odyssey's average (81) but it was Truly an improvement, as it held up better late in the season and had better retention. Odyssey had some sub-50% retention points late in the season and Nashville wasn't too close to doing that, even in a couple duds at the end of the season. I'm going with the "slightly above bubble" grade because I think the renewal was reasonable, but a modest improvement on Doctor Odyssey is not exactly a big win. Grade: C+.

Grey's Anatomy: It's into flop territory and the winter results were rough, but after the spring rally it still ended up with one of the more stable broadcast performances in the 10/9c hour (even if it was a few points worse than Nashville's hold at 9/8c). Grade: C+.
