Season two of the Canadian co-production Murder in a Small Town kept doing its low-rated thing. With a much weaker lead-in to start season two, Doc was never able to muster up anything close to its 88 Plus season one finale. It built significantly on Murder for the first couple weeks, but the two were roughly even beyond that. That did make Doc a significant improvement on last year's Accused.

Doc got a companion medical drama for the winter with newbie Best Medicine, which turned in steady, Doc season one-level ratings in the 8/7c hour. Doc improved with the new lead-in, getting within striking distance of its own season one run, though it dropped big when CBS competition returned at the start of the spring window.

Best Medicine: 72 Plus on Tuesday alone. It wasn't quite as impressive as Doc season one, as it was airing at 8/7c and didn't heat up the way that show did at the end of last season, but it held rather well post-premiere and looked like a godsend compared to most of Fox's other recent drama offerings. Grade: B.
Doc: 58 Plus on Tuesday. We never got another whiff of Doc's late-season one heat, which is a bit disappointing but not all that surprising given its lead-in and the DWTS competition in the fall. It got back to a reasonable level in the winter portion of the table, but that excludes its early-spring collapse when the CBS competition returned. Hovering around a 50 Plus for that last month left a bad taste in its mouth. The optimistic angle is it'll have Best Medicine rather than Murder alongside it for next fall. Grade: C.
