The Breakdown: Fox Tuesday in 2019-20 (The Resident, Empire, 24 Hours to Hell and Back)

It's time for a journey through the Fox Tuesday schedule in 2019-20...

NOTE: In addition to classic A18-49+, Breakdown posts in 2019-20 also use CVPlus, comparing spring ratings against a higher league average due to viewership inflation from COVID-19 stay-at-home orders. See here for more.

Fox put its increased depth to good use in 2019-20, pulling The Resident away from Monday and Empire away from Wednesday to create a night that was vastly improved over weak performers from a year ago. Empire resumed its massive decline from a gigahit peak just four years ago, but was still able to build on The Resident with some frequency in the fall.

The lineup was not quite as potent in the winter as Gordon Ramsay filled in at 9/8c, but the year-to-year growth was similar since it was being compared against the embarrassing final days of The Gifted from a year ago.

The growth continued in a double-digit way into the spring, but it was (if you believe CVPlus) considerably less as the final episodes of Empire took a major step down and typically fell behind The Resident when the two were paired.

The Resident: Who'd have thunk a day would come when getting paired with Empire would be a major timeslot downgrade? Moving from Monday with 9-1-1 to Tuesday with Empire was definitely enough of a downgrade to explain a lot of this decline, but maybe not quite all? Grade: B-.

Empire: A very sad way for one of the great TV ratings stories of the decade to end. I give it a little credit for the timeslot improvement and growing on The Resident in the fall, and it's unfortunate that it had to air its final episodes following Masked Singer repeats, but overall it just didn't have anything left when it came back after the new year. It only looks a little less awful in DVR comparisons, so I feel like this is being kind. Grade: D.

24 Hours to Hell and Back: I didn't really give this show any credit for its uptick last year alongside The Masked Singer, so I also won't place a ton of blame on it for basically reverting to about what it looked like when it launched in summer 2018. It was fine for filler. Grade: C+.
