The Fall 2015 Preview/Review, Monday

Welcome to The Fall Preview/Review, a look at how each broadcast network fared on each night of the schedule in 2014-15. These are basically the Schedules Plus Updates from last year, except now arranged by day of the week and with a teeny bit more focus on what's to come in fall 2015. 2014-15 year-to-year changes are in parentheses, while "VsAvg" compares 2014-15 to the full historical average and "Rank" ranks 2014-15 against all available previous occupants. Each network name links back to its now updated Schedules Plus post for this day of the week.

2015-16 Dancing with the Stars FallCastle

The improbable Dancing with the Stars comeback rolled on in the fall but slowed down in the spring season, which was just barely up in Plus. Much of DWTS' positive movement was given back at 10/9c, as Castle got some CBS procedural competition and was down to its lowest Plus since season two. The long-running combo is together for one more year in 2015-16.

2015-16 The Big Bang Theory LIFE IN PIECES ScorpionNCIS: Los Angeles

This may only be the 12th best CBS Monday in 14 years, but to lose How I Met Your Mother and still grow year-to-year was a win. NCIS: Los Angeles improving on the dreadful year-ago occupants was a given, but the real victory came in the other hours. 2BG and Mike and Molly held up just fine with no HIMYM, and the decision to kill another comedy hour paid off as Scorpion was one of the biggest new CBS dramas this generation.

The Big Bang Theory and newbie Life in Pieces air here for just over a month before moving to Thursday; Supergirl takes over at 8/7c for the late fall.

2015-16 The Voice FallBLINDSPOT

The Voice was down both in fall and spring, but the rate of decline isn't alarming and certainly nothing like what Fox has experienced with American Idol. The real Monday issue for NBC was what happened at 10/9c after The Blacklist headed to Thursday; November newbie State of Affairs (74) and the summer import The Night Shift (77) both struggled. They're certainly hoping their latest thriller Blindspot will be closer to Blacklist territory.

2015-16 Gotham MINORITY REPORT

Sleepy Hollow was one of the surprise hits of 2013-14, but it suffered a massive sophomore slump. (And the winter/spring 9/8c occupant The Following also took another big hit in season three.) However, the network stayed within striking distance of last year's Plus thanks to another new drama hit in Gotham. Once again, the higher-rated show stays and the lower-rated show departs for a newbie in fall 2015.

2015-16 CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND Jane the Virgin

Though there was a much flashier night in the CW's 2014-15 resurgence, don't discount the Monday improvement, as the network finally had enough depth to turn its Surrender Night into something in line with the CW's historical Monday average. The Originals was a massive improvement, even if down a lot from its season one ratings on Tuesday. And newbie Jane the Virgin did surprisingly OK at 9/8c. But the Monday respectability will be put to the test this fall as The Originals departs to try to help patch up flailing Thursday. That makes the new Monday (with former Showtime pilot Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) seemingly more compatible but also more of a wild card.
