The All-FBI Night
When FBI had a successful first season, establishing a new crime drama franchise on CBS, Dick Wolf didn't waste any time expanding the universe. FBI had a spin-off, FBI: Most Wanted, on the air by the middle of its second season. And for season four, the network took an even bigger step, moving NCIS out of a Tuesday 8/7c slot it had held for 18 years to put the mothership at 8/7c. They left Most Wanted at 10/9c and launched a second spin-off, FBI: International, in the hammock between the two.
International had solid retention on premiere night, holding about 90% with a 0.59 demo following FBI's 0.66. But the two went in separate directions in week two, with International falling to a 0.52 after the mothership's 0.68. It stabilized from there, hanging at around 80% retention for most of the rest of the season, and in fact most of the rest of the series.
CBS stuck with the tri-FBI lineup for four seasons. The trio took a bit of a hit in International's second season, facing real crime drama competition from ABC's The Rookie and others, then bounced back a touch in the following two seasons. International always looked like the softer of the spin-offs, as FBI: Most Wanted held almost all of its same-day ratings in the tougher 10/9c hour. But CBS didn't bother splitting hairs between the two, axing both in spring 2025 and turning Tuesday back over to the NCIS universe.
