Rating the Ratings: A shorter final season of HBO's acclaimed Boardwalk Empire ended the series on a solid ratings note, slightly upticking on last season's average and very nearly getting back to the 0.82 season three average. I nearly went with a worse grade here because even if it was steady in the last couple seasons, the numbers still weren't anything special. But a cable series holding steady in same-day ratings is an increasingly rare phenomenon. And shows like Justified and True Blood have proven it's a difficult task even for announced final seasons. Though A18-49+ isn't a great metric for cable, these numbers put this season just about on par with season two and the second half of season one. Grade: A-.
