The Last Thursday 9/8c Comedy Anchor
In a post-The Big Bang Theory world, CBS soon found out that its spin-off Young Sheldon, while successful in its own right, was not big enough to single-handedly reverberate across an entire two-hour block. After muddling through two seasons with a slumping Mom, CBS gave the 9/8c comedy hour one last try in 2021-22. This time, they found more success in the anchor spot with new comedy Ghosts. The show premiered with a 0.56 (110 Plus) and, after a bump to 0.61 the next week, fell back to right around the premiere rating and pretty much stayed there aside from a nice January bounce (0.70/0.65/0.68). It ended the season on the same 0.56 with which it started, consistently building big on its lead-in (fellow newbie United States of Al) and handily outrating the last couple Mom seasons.
The Last Comedy Power Hour?
Despite the promise of Ghosts, CBS folded up shop on the 9/8c comedy hour in 2022-23. The drama that initially replaced it (So Help Me Todd) did not exactly vindicate the decision, but moving Ghosts to 8:30 after Sheldon was a great deal for Ghosts, which grew to hit Plus levels in season two and stayed there.
It's had the occasional weird outlier, like a huge 0.67 (177 Plus) for its season three premiere followed by a 0.44 (116) the next week, but mostly it just turns in 90-105%ish retention from the Chuck Lorre anchor and checks out for the night. Nothing really changed as Young Sheldon gave way to its own spin-off, Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage, in 2024-25. Ghosts has turned in an incredibly consistent 132/133/132 Plus in seasons two through four.
