WHAT MATTERS:
- Adult Swim's Rick and Morty (1.12) extended its lead over the rest of scripted original cable, growing 9% to another new series high in week two. We'll see next week if it could hold that crown against last night's finale of True Detective.
- The only new addition this week is USA's comedy Playing House, a show that was squarely on the bubble last summer and only survived with a late renewal due to a creative arrangement that made on-demand services the first window. It didn't reward the network for its patience, as the 0.16/0.12 ratings went into bomb territory. This was a long way below the already shaky 0.4ish level it maintained throughout season one.
- The early summer finales are starting to trickle in:
- Some of these were series finales, like BET's long-running The Game (0.74) and ABC Family's Melissa and Joey (0.41). Neither show had a huge spike, but each hit its best 18-49 rating since February.
- Lifetime's UnREAL (0.30) never really broke out after a promising surge at the end of June, but it at least ended on an above average note.
- The ugliest of the finales was definitely AMC's Halt and Catch Fire (0.12), which plummeted to tie its low. Though the critical acclaim increased in season two, the ratings didn't respond, and it'd be a reach at this level. It can't be ruled out since it's not that far away from the 0.22 average of already renewed Turn, but Turn ended with a little ratings momentum and HaCF certainly did not.
