The Breakdown: CBS Monday in 2016-17 (Kevin Can Wait, Man with a Plan, Scorpion and more!)

It's time for a journey through the CBS Monday schedule in 2016-17...

Spotted Ratings, Monday 1/30/17

FINALS UPDATE: Quantico (0.7) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• The Quantico Monday experiment took an even darker turn in week two, with the show dropping to a 0.7 and retaining only about a third of its lead-in from The Bachelor (2.3).

•  CBS said a likely permanent farewell to The Odd Couple, which averaged 1.1/0.9 for its one-hour finale with repeats on both sides.

• Fox sent Gotham (down a tenth to 1.1) and Lucifer (1.2) off to a lengthy hiatus, while NBC's Celebrity Apprentice was down to 1.0 and couldn't get an upward adjustment this time. 

• On the CW, Supergirl (0.7) and Jane the Virgin (0.3) both shed a tenth in their second episodes of the winter. It was just the second dip to 0.3 this season for Jane.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 1/16/17

FINALS UPDATE: Howie Mandel All-Star Comedy Gala (0.3) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• NBC featured the return of Timeless (0.9) for a winter run following Celebrity Apprentice (1.2). While a raw series low, this 0.9 was not really any weaker in True than some of its later post-Voice episodes... but that's not a compliment.

• The CBS comedy lineup (1.7/1.5/1.5/1.1), finally free of football competition, had notable surges on Monday. It was also a huge night for ABC's The Bachelor (2.3), which set off on its usual post-premiere growth trajectory.

• On Fox, Gotham (1.2) and Lucifer (1.1) came back for what will be just a three-week stint.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 1/9/17

WHAT MATTERS:

• ESPN dominated Monday night with college football's national championship game, but ABC's female-skewing The Bachelor (2.1) was completely unfazed, holding up even better than usual against the big game. It led into two episodes new game show Big Fan (1.0/0.7), which is very temporary filler in the 10/9c hour leading up to the return of Quantico in two weeks.

• NBC's Celebrity Apprentice (1.1/1.0) did not hold up so well in week two, dipping from last week's already disappointing 1.3 premiere. A repeat of The Wall (0.8) followed at 10/9c.

• It was mostly repeats elsewhere. The CBS comedy lineup (1.6/1.2/1.0/1.0) basically had the same average as last week's all-original block, led by a repeat of The Big Bang Theory at 8/7c. The Odd Couple (1.0) at 9:30 was the only original. Fox had a repeat of December special Showtime at the Apollo (0.7/0.6) while the CW went with Supergirl (0.3) and Penn and Teller: Fool Us (0.3).

Spotted Ratings, Monday 1/2/17

FINALS UPDATE: Jimmy Kimmel Live Special (1.0) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• On the first Monday of the new year, ABC stood tallest with The Bachelor (2.1) just about matching last year's 2.2 premiere. At 10/9c, the network had a Bachelor-themed Jimmy Kimmel Live special (1.1).

• NBC brought back Celebrity Apprentice (1.3) with new host Arnold Schwarzenegger in fairly underwhelming fashion; its last premiere notched a 2.4 two years ago. It looks like Apprentice could still be an improvement on the Monday The Voice reality filler from last year, The Biggest Loser, but it may not be by a huge margin. It led into a second preview of game show The Wall (1.2), which will take up its regular Tuesday 8/7c slot starting tonight.

• CBS was back to Monday originals with Kevin Can Wait (1.4), Man with a Plan (1.2), 2 Broke Girls (1.3), The Odd Couple (1.0) and Scorpion (1.2), but mostly did not enjoy the usual bounces we see at the start of a new year. Perhaps it didn't help that ESPN's Rose Bowl game ran much deeper into East Coast primetime than expected.

• Fox and the CW are both ducking the college football competition on the first couple Mondays of the new year; Fox went with a MasterChef special (0.9) while the CW repeated its iHeartRadio Music Festival (0.3/0.2).

Spotted Ratings, Monday 12/12/16

FINALS UPDATE: The Great Christmas Light Fight (1.1) and The Great American Baking Show (R) (0.6) and Timeless (1.0) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• It was a fairly soft night for the CBS Monday comedy lineup, with anchors Kevin Can Wait (1.4) and 2 Broke Girls (1.2) inching down in the prelims. Man with a Plan (1.2) was even and The Odd Couple (1.0) slightly up at the bottoms of the hours. And Scorpion (1.1) inched down to round out the night. Kevin and The Odd Couple are done for 2016 now, but the others will return to lead out of a Michelle Obama special next Monday.

• NBC began The Voice's finale week with a bit of an uptick to 2.2. It was another very sharp year-to-year decline vs. the excellent year-ago season, as last fall had a 3.2 for the Monday finale (which was also paired with a huge Adele special). Timeless closed the year with another 1.2, and we will next see it leading out of Celebrity Apprentice in January.

• ABC's The Great Christmas Light Fight (1.3/1.2) and repeat of The Great American Baking Show (0.8) appear to be pending Monday Night Football preemptions?

• The holidays have already begun on the CW with specials Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer (0.3) and Greatest Holiday Commercials (0.2), as well as on Fox with repeats of Gotham (0.5) and Lucifer (0.5).

Spotted Ratings, Monday 11/28/16

FINALS UPDATE: The Voice (2.1) adjusted up while CMA Country Christmas (1.0) and Conviction (0.6) and Gotham (1.0) and Lucifer (1.1) and Jane the Virgin (0.4) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• The CW kicked off its four-way superhero crossover week with Supergirl (1.1), plus Jane the Virgin (0.5). (Pending a Green Bay preemption for Monday Night Football.)

• Elsewhere, only NBC (The Voice (2.0) / Timeless (1.1)) and Fox (Gotham (1.1) / Lucifer (1.2)) had regular lineups. CBS was all repeats except for The Odd Couple (0.9).

• ABC had its annual 'CMA Country Christmas' special (1.3) and Conviction (1.0) but is pending major MNF preemptions.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 11/21/16

FINALS UPDATE: Conviction (0.7) and The Odd Couple (1.0) and Supergirl (0.9) and Jane the Virgin (0.4) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• Kevin Can Wait (1.5) preliminarily ticked down for the second straight week on CBS, but it was a decent night for the rest of the comedy lineup; Man with a Plan (1.3) was even, while 2 Broke Girls (1.4) and The Odd Couple (1.1) both ticked up. Scorpion hung another 1.2 at 10/9c.

• ABC had only a minimal uptick for the performance finale of Dancing with the Stars (1.8), though it was still even-ish in Plus with last year's performance finale (2.1). Conviction had another 0.8 at 10/9c.

• On NBC, the late-season slump continued for The Voice (2.1/2.0), which will hope to benefit from DWTS' absence in the coming weeks. Timeless clung to 1.2 in the prelims at 10/9c.

• Fox's Gotham (1.1) and Lucifer (1.0) both inched down.

• And the CW's Supergirl (1.0) and Jane the Virgin (0.6) should be adjusted due to Monday Night Football preemptions.

FINALS UPDATE: 2 Broke Girls (1.3) adjusted up while Supergirl (0.7) and Jane the Virgin (0.3) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• The fourth week for the CBS comedy lineup saw several downticks. Kevin Can Wait (1.6) still looks good in the lead-off spot, but Man with a Plan (1.3) was just OK again at 8:30, and 2 Broke Girls (1.2) had a particular stinker at 9/8c. The CBS trends improved in the second half of the night as The Odd Couple (1.0) was even and Scorpion (1.2) picked up a tenth.

• ABC had a bit of an upswing with Dancing with the Stars (1.7/1.6) and Conviction (0.8), which rebounded to normal after a horrible result last week.

• On Fox, Gotham (1.2) and Lucifer (1.1) both had pretty good nights, with Lucifer growing for the second straight week since its Halloween low point.

• NBC's The Voice (2.3) and Timeless (1.2), along with the CW's Supergirl (0.8) and Jane the Virgin (0.5) are mostly eyeing slight growth, but may be nicked by Monday Night Football preemptions in finals.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 11/7/16

FINALS UPDATE: Conviction (0.6) and The Odd Couple (1.0) and Jane the Virgin (0.4) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• The end of DST plus the fact that last week was Halloween caused a rather ridiculous upswing in overall viewing  on Monday, pretty much throughout the first two hours but especially at 8:00 (which was up over 20%, from 24.5 to 30.1). That resulted in a slew of broadcast increases in those early hours.

• Most drastic was CBS' Kevin Can Wait (1.7), using an added assist from an Adam Sandler guest spot to zoom all the way back to its timeslot premiere rating from two weeks ago. Man with a Plan (0.1), 2 Broke Girls (1.4) and The Odd Couple (1.0) each packed on a tenth, but that meant MwaP looked a bit weaker by comparison with its Kevin lead-in.

•  The Voice (2.3) also had a significant increase, but is predictably finding it very difficult to sustain last year's hot pace from the late fall. It led into big ratings for a Saturday Night Live election special (2.1) at 10/9c, nearly doubling the week-ago Timeless.

• Fox's Gotham (1.2) and Lucifer (1.0) as well as the CW's Supergirl (0.7) were also on the post-Halloween upswing.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 10/31/16

FINALS UPDATE: Gotham (1.0) adjusted up while Kevin Can Wait (1.3) and Man with a Plan (1.3) and 2 Broke Girls (1.3) and The Odd Couple (0.9) and Scorpion (1.1) adjusted down.

• For the CBS comedy night, this means a pretty huge drop for Kevin Can Wait at 8/7c, but a decent enough hold from week two of Man with a Plan (causing Renewology to warm up a bit, even on a down night). 2 Broke Girls was down 0.1 (OK) and The Odd Couple down 0.2 (not great) from last week.

WHAT MATTERS:

• Halloween brought another slew of broadcast drops, and it'll be tough to know exactly what they mean until seeing the week-to-week change in overall viewing (as well as sorting out MNF preemptions). It was week two for the new CBS comedy lineup of Kevin Can Wait (1.4), Man with a Plan (1.5), 2 Broke Girls (1.5) and The Odd Couple (1.2), with Scorpion (1.4) rounding out the night. Stay tuned, as the network had at least one football preemption.

• NBC's The Voice (1.9/2.0) and Timeless (1.1) had a particularly rough night in the prelims, with Voice shedding about 25% week-to-week.

• Dancing with the Stars (1.4/1.5) took a more modest decline, but the network got little at 10/9c out of its annual CMA Awards preview special (0.7).

• Fox's Gotham (0.9) and Lucifer (0.9) both dipped into fractional territory for the first time.

• And Supergirl (0.6) was nicked again at 8/7c, leading into increasingly resilient Jane the Virgin (0.4) at 9/8c.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 10/24/16

FINALS UPDATE: Kevin Can Wait (1.7) adjusted up while Timeless (1.3) and Supergirl (0.8) and Jane the Virgin (0.4) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• CBS moved Kevin Can Wait (1.6) to the 8:00 lead-off slot and launched newbie Man with a Plan (1.6) at 8:30. Kevin shed a half-point in its 8/7c debut, which is probably not too far away from what should be expected when a Big Bang lead-in is lost. It was week three for 2 Broke Girls (1.4), which lost a tenth for the second straight week, and week two for The Odd Couple (1.1), which at least didn't get any worse than last week's premiere, in the 9:00 hour.

• In the 10/9c drama wars, Timeless (1.4) remained on top but gave up at least a tenth from last week. Conviction (0.8) preliminarily had a minor rebound and will hope to hold it in finals this time. And Scorpion (1.2) shed a tenth.

• Fox inched down with Gotham (1.1) and Lucifer (1.0), while the CW's Supergirl (0.9) and Jane the Virgin (0.6) are pending preemptions for Monday Night Football.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 5/23/16

WHAT MATTERS:

• ABC opened another season of The Bachelorette (2.0) in encouraging fashion, down just a tenth from last year's premiere even with a reduced lead-in from Dancing with the Stars (1.9). While Stars was down a bit more than league average from last year's performance finale, it was still the show's second-highest rating of the season.

• It was a discouraging performance finale night for The Voice (2.0), which actually went down from last week. The show had seemed to be improving its y2y trends in the last couple weeks, but this marked a return to the 20%+ declines that have been the norm for most of the season. And Blindspot finished its Monday 10/9c life with a fourth consecutive 1.3.

• CBS brought daytime institution The Price is Right (1.3) back into primetime for the first time since 2008 (at least by my count), where it will air one-hour specials on the last three days of the regular season. It mostly had mid-1's in its 2008 run, but a 1.3 in 2016 is a significantly stronger number; the synergy with Survivor probably brought in some extra audience. However, TPIR proved to be a bad lead-in for The Odd Couple, which tanked to 1.0/0.9 in its one-hour season finale. Person of Interest had another 0.9 at 10/9c.

• Fox closed out the Gotham season with a downtick to 1.2, and Houdini and Doyle (0.6) was also down a notch. 

• And the CW continued its summer roll-out with the double-episode return of Whose Line Is It Anyway? (0.4/0.4), matching its 0.4 premiere in April 2015. Reign had another 0.3.

Spotted Ratings, Thursday 5/19/16

WHAT MATTERS:

• FINALS UPDATE: Bones (0.9) adjusted up, while The Catch adjusted down to 0.8 for the full two-hour average. Game of Silence (0.6) also adjusted down.

• Grey's Anatomy (2.3) impressed big once again on its finale night, rising two tenths to its highest rating since the spring return in February. But The Catch once again did not impress, with even less interest than usual in its two-hour finale. It scored just a 0.9 in the 9:00 hour with the Grey's lead-in and dropped to a new low 0.8 at 10:00.

• CBS fared decently on the final Thursday of the season despite no original from The Big Bang Theory, as the Big Bang repeat and Mom anchored the first two hours with 1.7 ratings. The Odd Couple held up fairly well with a 1.5 at 8:30 and 1.4 for a bonus 9:30 episode. Rush Hour, which will continue into the early summer, had another 0.9.

• NBC's The Blacklist (1.3) matched last week in its season finale, while lead-in dud Strong (0.6) inched down and lead-out dud Game of Silence (0.7) was even.

• The CW also closed up Thursday shop for the season with an even Legends of Tomorrow (0.7) and an up The 100 (0.5) (but it may be an unsafe uptick with a 0.4 in the 9:30 half-hour). 

• Fox's Bones (0.8) and American Grit (0.6) will keep going into the summer and hope for better things as the competition departs.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 5/16/16

WHAT MATTERS:

• FINALS UPDATE: The Voice (2.1) adjusted up, as did the 8:30 edition of Mike and Molly (1.7) to tie its season high. Houdini and Doyle (0.7) also gained a tenth.

• After its surprisingly huge penultimate week surge, Mike and Molly ended its six-year run with a downtick on series finale night, averaging a 1.4 at 8:00 (down two tenths from last week) and a 1.6 at 8:30 (down a tenth from last week). Though off of last week's highs, it's still better than what it did in its first couple Monday airings this spring.
• In the 9:00 hour, it was yet another 1.5 for The Big Bang Theory (R) and yet another 1.3 for The Odd Couple, while Person of Interest inched down to 0.9 at 10/9c.

• An even longer series run came to an end on ABC, where Castle (1.3) finished its eighth and final season with an outright season high, and pulled into a tie for the 10/9c lead with Blindspot (1.3). Castle was just a tenth behind last season's finale, easily its best trend of the season. The dramas' lead-in reality programs Dancing with the Stars (1.7/1.8) and The Voice (2.0/2.1) were close to even with last week.

• On Fox, Gotham (1.3) inched up to end its four-week streak at 1.2, while Houdini and Doyle remained mired at 0.6.

• And the CW's Jane the Virgin finished season two with a swing back up to 0.4 as it awaits its scheduling fate at the upcoming upfront. Reign also inched back up to 0.3.

Spotted Ratings, Thursday 5/12/16

WHAT MATTERS:

• FINALS UPDATE: The Big Bang Theory (3.4), The Catch (1.0) and Legends of Tomorrow (0.7) adjusted up.

• It's not quite clear when we'll be seeing Scandal again, but it signed off for season five with a pretty solid surge to a 1.8 rating. This was the highest demo for beaten-down Scandal since the second episode of its winter return.
• The other two TGIT components will be back for their finales next week, but Grey's Anatomy (2.1) inched up anyway at 8/7c. At 10/9c, recently renewed The Catch (0.9) couldn't benefit from the Scandal upswing.

• CBS opened week three of the May sweep with its own big finale: the megahit The Big Bang Theory (3.3), which surged back from last week's season low and could end up with one of its biggest results of the spring after finals. 2 Broke Girls (1.7) also signed off for the season on a strong note at 9:30. In the middle, it was mixed news as The Odd Couple (1.6) was already below 50% TBBT retention even in the prelims, but Mom (1.8) had a big bounce-back. Both those shows will be back next week to populate the final Thursday of the season. So will Rush Hour (0.9), which inched up at 10/9c.

• On NBC, it was backdoor pilot night for the spin-off of The Blacklist (1.3), which narrowly outrated the previous couple episodes. Surrounding it were more rough results for Strong (0.7) and Game of Silence (0.7).

• Fox's Bones ticked back down to 0.8, while American Grit had another 0.6.

• And CW's Legends of Tomorrow (0.6) and The 100 (0.4) were even.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 5/9/16

WHAT MATTERS:

• After a couple fairly innocuous weeks to begin its return to Monday, Mike and Molly had a major surge to 1.6/1.7 in the week before the series finale. Though this basically matches the raw numbers of its winter Wednesday run, it is a more impressive showing in a post-DST world.
• Later in the night, The Big Bang Theory (R) (1.5) and The Odd Couple (1.3) both matched last Monday. And Person of Interest began its brief Monday 10/9c run with a new series low 1.0, but it was still not too far a cry from its 1.2 Tuesday premiere last week.

• There was much steadiness elsewhere. In the case of NBC's The Voice (2.1), that meant the show's best point on a year-to-year basis all season. (Its third-to-last Monday last year got just a 2.3.) Blindspot stayed at 1.3 after a downward finals adjustment. 

• On Fox, it got even worse for Houdini and Doyle, which ticked down to 0.6 in week two. Gotham posted its fourth consecutive 1.2.

• ABC's Dancing with the Stars (1.7) inched down, while Castle (1.1) inched up.

• And after a downward adjustment in finals, Reign was down to 0.2, a number it hit just once in its Friday run earlier in the season. Jane the Virgin couldn't bounce back from last week and had another 0.3.

Spotted Ratings, Thursday 5/5/16

WHAT MATTERS:

• FINALS UPDATE: Though it had a long way to go in the un-roundeds, The Big Bang Theory (3.0) still managed an upward adjustment to stay out of the rounded twos. However, Mom (1.5) went down a tenth to fall behind the two comedies sandwiching it, and Rush Hour (0.8) also went down to a new low.

• CBS' The Big Bang Theory (2.9) gave back last week's promising uptick and then some, tumbling by a half point. It usually adjusts up considerably, so it may find its way back into threes after finals, but a new season low is highly probable. The Odd Couple (1.6) and Mom (1.6) also gave up a tenth (and have to hope it's not more after finals), while 2 Broke Girls (1.6) and Rush Hour (0.9) stayed even.

• On ABC, Scandal (1.5) and The Catch (0.9) were each back down by a tenth, but Grey's Anatomy (2.0) clung to the twos once again.

• NBC saw Strong (0.6) give up a tenth while Game of Silence (0.7) got one back. The Blacklist was frozen at 1.2.

• Bones inched back up to 0.9 at 8/7c for Fox, but American Grit (0.6) lost another precious tenth.

• And Legends of Tomorrow (0.6) inched down on the CW, while The 100 had yet another 0.4.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 5/2/16

WHAT MATTERS:

• The week after Scorpion's finale, CBS made a return to its historic two-hour Monday comedy block. It was a fairly significant night for bubble series The Odd Couple (1.3), airing on Monday for the first time. And it did passably enough, dropping by two tenths from its The Big Bang Theory repeat (1.5) lead-in. This is markedly below what it's been doing on Thursday, but that was to be expected. Meanwhile, Mike and Molly had a 1.3/1.4 for two originals in the 8/7c hour. And despite a comedy lead-in, the season finale of NCIS: Los Angeles (1.3) inched up to the high end of its spring results.

• Fox got a head start on summer with the dud premiere of co-production Houdini & Doyle (0.7), which barely managed half of recent Lucifer numbers. It had a steady 1.2 lead-in from Gotham.

• Dancing with the Stars (1.7/1.8) was close to even while The Voice (2.1) was on the upswing. 10/9c dramas Castle (1.0) and Blindspot (1.3) each inched down.

• And the CW had another 0.3 from Reign, while Jane the Virgin preliminarily ticked down to join it at 0.3.
