It's time for a journey through the Fox Wednesday schedule in 2022-23...

In the fall, The Masked Singer continued its downward spiral, going -24% year-to-year in its Wednesday episodes. The return of LEGO Masters kept the 9/8c hour from declining as much, but this was a far cry from the LEGO Masters we first saw after TMS back in spring 2020.

After a weak Tuesday run last season, Name That Tune returned to the night where it premiered decently in 2021 and was able to get a bit of that season one juice back. Newbie Special Forces: World's Toughest Test was generally a bit below its Name That Tune lead-in, then got a tiny bump in its last three episodes when The Masked Singer returned.

The spring finally gave Fox a much-needed relatively steady season for The Masked Singer, down just 4% from spring 2022. But there was no improvement in the 9/8c hour from the latest entry in the rotating cast of unscripted players, Farmer Wants a Wife.

The Masked Singer Fall: Season average is extremely skewed by a Thanksgiving post-NFL episode, but if you throw that out this would've been a fourth straight season with 20%+ declines. Last season you could at least argue it was still at the top of the charts, but it was handily beaten in its timeslot by Survivor this time around. Grade: D+.
Name That Tune: -35% last year and then +39% this year is quite a roller coaster, but the end result was about 10% behind what it did in season one on the same night. Getting thrown away on Tuesday after The Resident is probably worse than airing on Wednesday, but I still don't fully understand why there was quite this much whiplash. If I gave it a D+ for the big drop last year, I guess I have to give it a Grade: B+ for the rebound.
The Masked Singer Spring: Have we finally found the bottom? This was a step in the right direction, but we need more data. If it could stop here and stay in hit territory for another couple years, that would give it good longevity along with its huge peak ratings, and Fox would be quite happy with its run. Grade: B-.
LEGO Masters: Another show inflated by a football episode, but its Wednesday average of 75 is basically no different from the 73 it got in summer 2021. A bit underwhelming for a fall Masked Singer lead-out. But it got an early season four renewal, so I'm assuming that it still fares pretty well in the young male sub-demos (which we sadly don't get to see anymore). Grade: C.
Special Forces: World's Toughest Test: Nothing special, but notably it had a higher Wednesday average than both the fall and spring Masked Singer lead-outs. Kinda wish we had gotten to see this get one of the big football lead-ins (or even a TMS lead-in earlier than its final three episodes). Grade: C+.
Farmer Wants a Wife: Basically the same show as Domino Masters which I gave a D+ last year. This one got renewed, which I'm assuming is in part about loading up on strike content, but there wasn't any sign of promise in the ratings. Grade: D+.
