Spotted Ratings, Wednesday 10/7/15

WHAT MATTERS:
  • FINALS UPDATE: The Middle (2.0), Code Black (1.2), Law and Order: SVU (1.6), Rosewood (1.8) and Empire (5.1) all adjusted up a tenth. Nashville (1.0) went down. On FX, American Horror Story opened the Hotel edition with a 2.99, ever so slightly below the last two season premieres (3.11 last year and 3.05 in 2013).
  • The big four were marked by a lot of downward movement on the season's third Wednesday, including another few ticks shaved off of the Empire (5.0) machine at 9/8c. Its newbie lead-in Rosewood (1.7) was also down three more tenths from last week, with another particularly back-loaded half-hour breakdown (1.5 -> 1.9).
  • CBS had the most brutal night on a week-to-week basis, with Survivor (2.0) and Criminal Minds (1.7) both disturbingly dropping by at least three tenths from last week. Newbie Code Black (1.1) fell even harder with a rotten 27% week two drop, seemingly already out of the bubble conversation.
  • NBC was also down across the board, though more modestly on its first Wednesday without a season premiere; The Mysteries of Laura inched down to 1.1 and Law and Order: SVU (1.5) and Chicago PD (1.5) each lost two tenths, keeping the night within 10%ish on a year-to-year basis.
  • And ABC was a mixed bag, with some significant regressions from last week's overachieving The Middle (1.9) and The Goldbergs (2.1) but a minor rebound from last week's underachieving Black-ish (1.9). Middle and Goldbergs are still pretty healthy year-to-year, but not so much for Modern Family (2.7), which was also down three tenths. Nashville (1.1) was even but will hope to avoid downward adjustment with a 1.1 -> 1.0 breakdown.
  • Amid a bunch of big four drops, the CW had a fantastic start on Wednesday as the ever-strengthening Arrow (1.1) topped last season's premiere. Supernatural (0.9) had an even bigger surge to open season eleven, going well above its 0.6/0.7 level from the spring.
