The Breakdown: ABC Sunday in 2022-23 (America's Funniest Home Videos, American Idol, The Company You Keep and more!)

It's time for a journey through the ABC Sunday schedule in 2022-23...

ABC Sunday moved back in a positive direction as Wheel of Fortune got reunited with its classic syndication partner Jeopardy! for celebrity editions in the fall. Jeopardy! was only up a bit vs. last year's 8/7c Wheel eps, but Wheel crushed last year's Supermarket Sweep at 9/8c, and that growth continued into the 10/9c hour with The Rookie, whose Plus ratings here were about as strong as in the winter/spring after Idol the previous couple years. It foreshadowed a big breakout for The Rookie in its move to Tuesday in the winter.

ABC aired several theatricals prior to the arrival of American Idol and new drama The Company You Keep in late February.

Though it started somewhat slowly in the episodes at the end of the winter window, a strong spring meant it was another growth season for American Idol. But ABC couldn't keep the 10/9c hour at Rookie levels with newbie The Company You Keep, which premiered at sub-50% retention and stayed there for the whole run.

America's Funniest Home Videos: Got its usual Idol and NBA-related boosts late in the season, which at this point seem like enough to keep this show on a 60 Minutes-like inevitable upward trajectory. The trends from the fall were just fine as well. Grade: B.

Celebrity Jeopardy!: Already updated.

American Idol Sun: The spring comparison above is impressive, but the pre-spring episodes dragged the season-long comparison down a good bit, and the Monday episodes were down a touch year-to-year as well. Still, it was Idol's strongest season in the ABC era, and it was one of the strongest shows in primetime (beating both The Voice seasons as well). Grade: B+.

Celebrity Wheel of Fortune: Like Jeopardy!, it got a huge boost to its season-long average from some weeknight 8/7c episodes in the winter. In the fall, it was down just a touch in Plus in a move to the 9/8c hour (though the Jeopardy! lead-in probably helped with that transition). Grade: B.

The Rookie: Already updated.

The Company You Keep: Was trying to decide if I should give it the same D as Alaska Daily or bump it up a notch. Unfortunately, ABC has very little post-Idol history to go on, having mostly aired The Rookie; for a decent comp you really have to go all the way back to spring 2018 drama Deception (which I gave a C-). This show was almost ten points weaker than Deception airing after a stronger Idol, and obviously it was a massive downgrade on The Rookie, so I will stick with another Grade: D.
