War of 18-49 Update, The Bachelorette (Summer 2014)

Let's take a look at the Summer 2014 season (the tenth overall) of The Bachelorette on ABC.

Rating the Ratings: While The Bachelor continues to strengthen in the regular season, it's been a rougher road for the summer editions of The Bachelorette. It's still a hit by summer standards, but it's hard to believe the winter Bachelor and summer Bachelorette were separated by less than two tenths just a couple years ago. In 2014, the gap grew to nearly a full point as The Bachelorette dropped slightly more than average (while The Bachelor dropped less than average, even against the Olympics). I expected a better start to the Bachelorette season since its premiere led out of Dancing with the Stars (which didn't happen last year), and it also didn't get the usual huge bounce at the end of the season. But the show may have suffered a bit because the first two Monday hours became more competitive this summer; Fox went from a surrender night last year to MasterChef/24, while NBC's American Ninja Warrior picked up some steam. Grade: C+.

Here's the now updated War of 18-49 post for The Bachelorette.

Holy moly, 17.6% viewing levels on the 4th of July. Is that typical, or just because it was on a Friday?

The Bachelorette started up 5% with a DWTS boosted premiere and ended down 24% for the finale (not counting the Rose thing). And last year the Voice was airing into June! This year had no Voice or Olympics. Bad season. C

I think being on Friday hurt somewhat. The estimate was right at 20% last year (on a Thursday).
