FINALS UPDATE: NBA Finals (5.4, +1.0) adjusted up while Jimmy Kimmel Live: Game Night (0.9, -1.5), NBA Countdown (1.5, -0.9), American Ninja Warrior (R) (0.5) and My Last Days (0.1) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• The NBA Finals came to a very early end with Game 4 on Friday. The preliminary hours (4.1/4.7) are actually down close to 20% vs. last year's 5.0/5.9 for Game 4, and will clearly come nowhere close to the deciding Game 5 from last year (9.0 on a Monday).

• Elsewhere, the finale of Fox's Phenoms is eyeing what would be the first 0.1 for a big four network on a night other than Saturday. (Five telecasts in 2016 and 2017, including an original episode of Doubt, have hit the mark on a Saturday.) EDIT: I missed a Brooklyn Nine-Nine repeat which hit a 0.1 against the Super Bowl on February 4. So this would be the seventh total, and second original to do it.

FINALS UPDATE: 20/20 (0.4), Blindspot (0.5), Harry and Meghan: A Love Story (0.2) and Life Sentence (0.1) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• On the last Friday of the season, ABC's Once Upon a Time (0.5) couldn't even manage a one-tenth uptick for its series finale. Agents of SHIELD was also steady at 0.5.

• The Hawaii Five-0 (0.7) season finale was back down to tie its low from two weeks ago, leading out of another 0.6 from Celebrity Undercover Boss. But NBC was on the upswing with Blindspot (0.6) and Dateline (0.8), as was Fox with the two-hour finale of MasterChef Junior (0.7/0.9).

• The CW (which looks like it may be pending a preemption) was the latest to offer a royal wedding special (0.3), while Life Sentence hopes to hold onto a preliminary 0.2.

FINALS UPDATE: Blue Bloods (0.9) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:

• It was an uptick night for CBS dramas Hawaii Five-0 (0.8) and Blue Bloods (0.8), even though they got little help from the return of Undercover Boss in celebrity form (0.6). This was below everything the Boss did in its late-season Friday run last year (0.8/0.7/0.9/0.8).

• Everything on ABC (0.5/0.5/0.5) was also up a notch, but NBC's Blindspot (0.5) and Dateline (0.6/0.7) along with the CW dramas (0.1/0.1) were closer to even. Fox was close to its usual MasterChef Junior levels with a two-hour Meghan Markle special (0.6/0.7).

FINALS UPDATE: MasterChef Junior (0.7) adjusted up while Dynasty (0.1) and Life Sentence (0.1) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• On season finale night for MacGyver (0.6), it was a terrible night for all three of the CBS dramas. Mac hit its first ever 0.6 just a week after its first ever 0.7; Hawaii Five-0 fell to 0.7 after never getting below 0.9 all season; and Blue Bloods (0.7) found a new series low as well.

• Fox's MasterChef Junior (0.6/0.7) was also on the downswing in its return from an NFL Draft preemption last week, and ABC's Once Upon a Time (0.4) gave back last week's uptick while NBC was even with Blindspot (0.5) and Dateline (0.7). The only network that appears to have upward momentum is the CW (0.2/0.2), but it looks like there's a preemption here as Life Sentence would be up by over 100% in total viewers.
  

Spotted Ratings, Friday 4/27/18

WHAT MATTERS:

• Night two of NFL Draft coverage on Fox (0.6/0.6/0.5) was actually a little worse than the usual MasterChef Junior rating. It was behind the CBS dramas (0.7/0.9/0.8) and about on par with NBC's Blindspot (0.5) / Dateline (0.6/0.7) in the nightly race.

• On ABC, Agents of SHIELD (0.4) mercifully did not get any lower on Avengers premiere weekend, and Once Upon a Time (0.5) actually edged up.

• The CW's Life Sentence made its move to Friday with a familiar 0.1, and its preliminary total viewership (495,000) was actually above the last couple Wednesday episodes. Dynasty eked out a 0.2 at 8/7c.

FINALS UPDATE: The Goldbergs (1.4), Survivor (1.7) and Empire (1.8) adjusted up while Designated Survivor (0.6) and Life Sentence (0.1) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• ABC's new sitcom Alex, Inc. (0.9) took a two-tenth drop in week two, putting it behind anything Speechless did with an original The Goldbergs lead-in. (Speechless did get to a 0.9 on March 14 when it led off the night.) It was a low-end night for Goldbergs (1.3) as well, though Modern Family (1.5) perked up a bit at 9/8c. American Housewife (1.2) and Designated Survivor (0.7) looked pretty standard.

• Fox stayed on top on Wednesday with Empire (1.7) and Star (1.3) both down 10-15% from last week's spring premieres.

• On CBS, SEAL Team was off for the night and replaced by an NCIS repeat (0.7) at 9/8c. Surrounding it, Survivor (1.6) and Criminal Minds (1.0) both inched down. The Blacklist (0.9) was the only NBC original, and the CW's Life Sentence (0.2) came up from last week despite a repeat lead-in.

FINALS UPDATE: SEAL Team (0.9) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• ABC's extensive rollout kept on churning with new sitcom Alex, Inc. (1.1) premiering at 8:30 between The Goldbergs (1.4) and Modern Family (1.4). It basically looked like a typical episode of Speechless on premiere night. So it kinda depends on how you feel about how Speechless was doing, but there's certainly not a ton of room to maneuver for Alex. The network also offered an encore of Splitting Up Together (0.8) instead of American Housewife at 9:30, while Designated Survivor hung onto what looks like a shaky 0.7.

• Fox was back to its fall Wednesday lineup of Empire (2.0) and Star (1.5). The former was down by close to 30% from its 2.8 spring 2017 premiere. (It looks better in the table because the year-ago evening was Empire's second episode of the spring.) However, both shows did pick up some from their fall finales (1.9/1.3).

• NBC's dramas sat out in favor of a two-hour The Voice recap (1.3) and a low-rated Andrew Lloyd Webber special (0.6). That was really welcome news for Criminal Minds (1.1), which boomed to its best rating since early in the fall, but facing Voice didn't move the needle for Survivor (1.7) or SEAL Team (1.0).

• And the CW had a brutal night as Riverdale fell to 0.3 and Life Sentence didn't even have to wait for an adjustment to post its first 0.1.

Spotted Ratings, Wednesday 3/21/18

FINALS UPDATE: The Goldbergs (1.6), Modern Family (1.7) and Survivor (1.8) adjusted up while Speechless (1.2) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• ABC had a second straight big comedy night as all the Wednesday regulars returned to originals, with The Goldbergs (1.5), Speechless (1.3), Modern Family (1.6) and American Housewife (1.3) likely all pulling their best ratings since January. At 10/9c, Designated Survivor (0.7) hung onto last week's uptick.

• Fox's 9-1-1 (1.7) got an uptick to finish season one, and it tied Survivor (1.7) for the Wednesday lead. Its lead-in The X-Files (0.9) bounced back from last week's low.

• With a repeat of SVU (0.8) at 8/7c, NBC's Law and Order: SVU (1.4) and Chicago PD (1.3) also had their best ratings since January. And on CBS, SEAL Team (1.0) inched back into the ones, between steady Survivor and Criminal Minds (0.9).

FINALS UPDATE: The X-Files (0.7) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• It was an unwelcome start to DST for Speechless, which fell to a new low 0.9 for two episodes in the 8/7c, without help from its usual lead-in The Goldbergs and lead-out Modern Family. American Housewife (1.0) was down a tenth with a repeat Modern lead-in (1.0), while Designated Survivor was up to 0.7 for the first time since its return from hiatus.

• The 8:00 hour was also down on NBC with The Blacklist (0.9) and Fox with The X-Files (0.8). However, Law and Order: SVU (1.3) picked up a notch for NBC with less CBS competition, and 9-1-1 (1.6) may have a shot at doing so after finals with a 1.7 in the 9:30 half-hour.

• On CBS, the already dominant Survivor had the best hold among the 8/7c shows, posting yet another 1.7 to top the night. After an NCIS repeat at 9/8c (0.6), Criminal Minds (0.9) was even.

• And the CW's Riverdale is once again eyeing its first 0.4 of the season and will need finals help to avoid it. But this week, newbie Life Sentence did not need to wait for finals to post its 0.2.
