The Breakdown: ABC Tuesday in 2019-20 (The Conners, Mixed-ish, Black-ish and more!)

It's time for a journey through the ABC Tuesday schedule in 2019-20...

Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 1/28/20

FINALS UPDATE: This Is Us (1.4) adjusted up while Arrow (0.2) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• The CW's Arrow ended its eight-season run with a 0.3 at 9/8c, leading out of a retrospective special at 8/7c (0.2).

• A mostly flat night for the big four saw The Conners (0.9) go fractional in the rounded numbers for the first time, while the other ABC comedies (0.6/0.5/0.5) and the finale of Emergence (0.3) matched last week. NBC's This Is Us (1.3) ticked down for the second straight week, while CBS' NCIS (1.1) was the only riser.

FINALS UPDATE: No adjustments.

WHAT MATTERS:

• The return of the regular ABC comedy lineup saw The Conners (1.0) inch down from its fall finale, while Bless This Mess (0.6) was even. At 9/8c, Mixed-ish (0.5) tied its low from the last time it didn't have a Jeopardy! lead-in, while Black-ish (0.5) and Emergence (0.3) matched last week.

• The CW's Arrow (0.3) moved to 8/7c before wrapping up with a two-hour event next week, while Legends of Tomorrow (0.2) began its season at 9/8c (though technically the last hour of Crisis On Infinite Earths counted as a Legends episode).

• After holding in week two, FBI: Most Wanted (0.7) dipped in week three, behind its rising FBI (0.9) lead-in. NBC's This Is Us (1.4) and New Amsterdam (0.7) each dropped a tenth from last week's winter premieres.

WHAT MATTERS:

• The last night of Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time (1.9) dominated but lost some steam from its low-2's level last week, and it also provided way less assistance to lead-out comedies Mixed-ish (0.7) and Black-ish (0.5). At 10/9c, Emergence cratered all the way to its first ever 0.3.

• NBC featured the returns of dramas This Is Us (1.4, down a notch from its fall finale) and New Amsterdam (even at 0.8). At 8/7c, Ellen's Game of Games (1.0) matched last week's 8/7c hour.

• The CW had its first drama programming of 2020, the two-hour wrap-up to Crisis on Infinite Earths (0.5/0.5). This was a dip from the 0.65/0.60/0.65 for the first three hours in early December.

• On the other two networks, the only movement was downticks from 24 Hours to Hell and Back (0.6) and FBI (0.8). That meant FBI's spin-off FBI: Most Wanted (0.8) had a promising week two hold at 10/9c.

WHAT MATTERS:

• ABC's Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time (2.4) event was a breakout success, posting nearly the same Plus as last winter's The Masked Singer premiere. It was one of the biggest things to air on ABC all season, topped only by The Little Mermaid Live! and the last hour of New Year's Rockin' Eve. It also had enough juice to vault Mixed-ish (1.1) to a new series high by a wide margin, and even helped out Black-ish (0.8) and Emergence (0.5) later in the night.

• NBC featured the two-hour return of Ellen's Game of Games (1.0/1.1), which took about the same 30%ish year-to-year drop as America's Got Talent: The Champions did on Monday. It led into a very early preview for Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist (0.6), the musical drama which will next air on Sundays over a month from now.

• CBS premiered its latest procedural spinoff FBI: Most Wanted (0.8), which dropped a tenth from the FBI mothership (0.9) and basically looked like a high-end episode of previous occupant NCIS: New Orleans. The CBS night began with a steady NCIS (1.0).

• Even Fox had a season premiere as the Gordon Ramsay offering 24 Hours to Hell and Back (0.7) returned for season three and matched its The Resident lead-in (0.7). The year-to-years look bad since 24 Hours aired alongside The Masked Singer last year, but it's a fine result considering the show hit a 0.8 without Masked help at the end of last season.

FINALS UPDATE: NCIS: New Orleans (0.6) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• ABC got an extraordinary performance out of The Little Mermaid Live! (2.6), the biggest showing for one of these live musical events in raw numbers since Grease Live! (4.3) in early 2016. On an A18-49+ basis, it should easily top Grease (which had a 295ish) and become the biggest one of these on record. But it provided only a two-tenth boost for rookie drama Emergence (0.7) at 10/9c.

• Against the big event, the competition had a mixed to negative night. NBC's The Voice (1.3) actually managed a rebound, but dramas This Is Us (1.3) and New Amsterdam (0.7) inched down.

• CBS was down a tick with NCIS (1.0) but even later in the night (0.8/0.7), while Fox was steady with The Resident (0.7) but down again with Empire (0.7). The CW's The Flash (0.4) and Arrow (0.2) also dropped a tenth.

FINALS UPDATE: Mixed-ish (0.8) and World Series (4.1, +0.3) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:

• Game 6 of the World Series (3.4/3.8/4.1) is headed for easily the series' highest ratings to date, but the return of the ABC comedy lineup hung in there nicely thanks to its usual Halloween bump. The Conners (1.2), Bless This Mess (0.8), Mixed-ish (0.7) and especially Black-ish (0.8) were all up vs. two weeks ago (Mixed-ish tied last week). Emergence (0.5) returned flat at 10/9c.

• NBC was not quite as resilient, with The Voice (1.2) and This Is Us (1.4) eyeing new season lows while New Amsterdam (0.8) tied its season low. The CW was flat with The Flash (0.5) and Arrow (0.3). CBS (0.8/0.6/0.5) was in repeat mode.

WHAT MATTERS:

• There were some comedy downticks for ABC's The Conners (1.1), Bless This Mess (0.7) and Black-ish (0.6), and the first two hours on NBC (1.3/1.5/0.8) were also down. CBS (1.1/0.9/0.7) and Fox (0.7/0.8) were steady (and up a notch in FBI's case).

• The CW's The Flash (0.5) lost a tenth from last week's premiere and led into the return of Arrow (0.3) for its final season at 9/8c.

FINALS UPDATE: The Conners (1.2) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:

• Week three for ABC saw The Conners back at a preliminary 1.1 (last week it adjusted up to a 1.2 final) while Bless This Mess preliminarily inched up to 0.8. Mixed-ish (0.7) and Black-ish (0.7) were even while Emergence took a rough drop to 0.5 (following a very high 0.6 last week).

• Some of the early season heat wore off for NCIS (1.1), down two tenths along with its lead-out FBI (0.8). NBC's The Voice (1.5) and This Is Us (1.6) were each down a tenth, while Empire (0.8) also lost another tenth in week three.

• The CW brought back The Flash (0.6), down two tenths from last year's premiere and tying last week's finale. It led into an encore of the Batwoman pilot (0.3).

Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 10/1/19

FINALS UPDATE: The Conners (1.2) and The Voice (1.6) adjusted up while New Amsterdam (0.8) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• Week two brought a two-tenth drop for most of the ABC Tuesday lineup, including newbies Mixed-ish (0.7) and Emergence (0.6) but also returnees The Conners (1.1) and Black-ish (0.7). Only Bless This Mess (0.7) was able to stay within a tenth of last week.

• The other networks held up better, including just a one-tenth decline for the leading NBC lineup of The Voice (1.5), This Is Us (1.7) and New Amsterdam (0.9). That'll make the y2y situation look a little less dire for This Is Us, which fell six tenths in the year-ago week two.

• Fox was also down a notch with The Resident (0.7) and Empire (0.9). CBS' FBI (1.0) was the lone riser of the night, surrounded by a steady NCIS mothership (1.3) and NCIS: New Orleans (0.7).

FINALS UPDATE: Black-ish (0.9) and The Voice (1.6) adjusted up while New Amsterdam (1.0) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• ABC began its scripted newbie rollout with comedy Mixed-ish (0.9) at 9/8c and drama Emergence (0.8) at 10/9c. Mixed-ish built by a notch on 8:30 sophomore Bless This Mess (0.8) and also outrated its lead-out, the Black-ish mothership (0.8). Meanwhile, the Emergence premiere looked a little worse than the year-ago The Rookie opener (1.0 leading out of a 0.9 Splitting Up Together) but it still has a little cushion to work with.
• The ABC night began with The Conners (1.3), which remained the runaway standout of the lineup but tied its low rating from season one and was down close to half from the year-ago 2.4 series premiere.

• On NBC, the rough drops from late last season continued for This Is Us (1.8), preliminarily down by a whooping 40% from last year's premiere. But it may get some help in finals since it ran eight minutes into the 10:00 hour. That could also hurt New Amsterdam (1.1) in finals, though if it somehow holds it would be the show's highest rating since last November.
• Leading off the night was The Voice (1.5), which had a much worse y2y trend on Tuesday than on Monday (not picking up as much heat before a weaker TIU).

• A revamped Fox Tuesday began with The Resident (0.8) tying its spring low and Empire (1.0) opening its final season on a new series low (down almost half from last year's 1.9 premiere).

• And CBS looked strong with the Cote de Pablo return on NCIS (1.3) but had significant year-to-year declines later in the night with FBI (0.9) and NCIS: New Orleans (0.7).
