A year after the big hit-level breakout of The Golden Bachelor, season one of The Golden Bachelorette paled in comparison, only occasionally even cracking the league average before its 0.38 (120 Plus) finale. Abbott Elementary was tacked on at 9:30, where it had its worst results of the season and some of the worst of the series, and proved incompatible with What Would You Do? at 10/9c.

Things perked up substantially for Abbott after the new year, starting with a huge launch (0.66 demo/208 Plus) for its lead-in Shifting Gears that Abbott (0.68/214) miraculously built from in its crossover with It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Both shows dropped hugely a week later and were closer to league average territory by the end of the winter. The downside to the comedy hour was that ABC had to tank Celebrity Jeopardy! yet again by removing it from the local programming lead-in. However, it was a good enough pairing with WWYD? to give that show a bit of juice in the winter.

The Conners showed up for a six-episode final season and basically picked up where it (and Shifting Gears) left off, while Abbott grew from Conners most weeks and fueled most of the growth in this period.

Shifting Gears: The premiere actually had a higher Plus than Tim Allen's momentous Last Man Standing Fox premiere in 2018 (193 Plus), and the season average also outdid that season (114). However, that stat probably wouldn't have held up if Shifting had aired many more than 10 episodes, as it was clearly tapering off by the end of the winter. We'll see how much juice is left this fall, but it was still at league average levels even in its last episodes, so this season stands as another ratings win for Allen. Grade: A-.
The Conners: A solid but unspectacular short final season. The 9:30 episodes really tanked last year's average and it was basically even if you throw those out. Grade: B.
Abbott Elementary: It's kinda hilarious how this show is completely all over the place within each season, yet somehow the season average ends up in the 110's every time. The Golden Bachelorette pairing didn't go well, but I would argue the 8:30 run after Shifting and The Conners was about as consistently solid as this show has looked. Whether it can match that again is largely up to Shifting Gears. Grade: B+.
