In its first ever regular season turn, Bachelor in Paradise kept ABC competitive but proved a substantial downgrade on last year's Dancing with the Stars. The Good Doctor kicked off a season of relatively small decline, keeping the network competitive in the 10/9c hour.

Though it wasn't down quite as sharply as last year, it was another year of significant decline for The Bachelor mothership. Much of the decline for the season came in the last few weeks, outside the winter window, when the show did not get anything like its usual finale spike.

American Idol had another growth season on Sunday, but the Monday episodes were down just a touch. They started a couple weeks later than last year which may explain the difference.

Bachelor in Paradise:  Losing Dancing with the Stars predictably hurt the schedule, and ABC will be reversing course on that decision next fall, but Bachelor in Paradise did at least keep the lights on. These Plus numbers are in line with the show's last couple summer seasons, but I think they're rather inflated because, as a fall show, this season got to use the 2022-23 league average despite airing barely over a year later than the summer 2021 season which used the 2020-21 average. (It was down 37% in raw numbers from summer 2021 to fall 2022.) Ideally, this show seems better suited for the summer, but the looming writers' strike disruptions mean it is slated for another fall season on Tuesdays. Grade: C.

The Bachelor: After a three-year heyday at roughly megahit levels, in just two years The Bachelor has plummeted all the way back to its Plus ratings from about a decade ago. The declines this year weren't quite as bad as last year, but the complete lack of a spike for the finale suggests it's losing some of its buzz factor. Grade: C.

The Good Doctor: While not an impressive performer in the live ratings anymore (now around the low end of Castle's long run in the slot), it has definitely slowed its declines. Considering how much weaker its lead-ins were in the winter and especially the fall, that was good enough for the run to continue. Grade: C+.
