Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 6/4/13

WHAT MATTERS:
  • NBC brought back the summer's biggest reality franchise America's Got Talent at a solid level but down by 16% from last year's mid-May premiere. Though they've been roundly criticized for premiering The Voice so late into the spring, one fringe benefit of that move was getting the chance to use it as a launch-pad for what had been a sagging AGT late last summer. It seems to have worked decently enough, at least for now.
  • With NBC averaging a 3.0+ in every hour, competing originals on the other networks all took a multiple-tick hit, from So You Think You Can Dance to Extreme Weight Loss and Brooklyn DA.

I think NBC was very stupid to start The Voice so late this year. Instead of exposing their highest rated show to low summer viewing levels, they could've premiered it in February, where it probably would've been able to maintain 4.5+ for the entire season. NBC also would've had the advantage of getting The Voice to boost both their February and May sweeps averages. Anyways, it's not like the programming in February was so world-shattering that replacing it with The Voice would've been foolish or something.

I actually like The Voice continuing on into the summer. It's not unfamiliar territory since season one did the same thing. And while NBC probably left some ratings points on the table by not debuting it in February, it's at least an example of a broadcast network becoming serious about year-round programming. As much as we love sweeps, they've been becoming more of a PR thing than their previous function of helping markets set their ad rates. I don't see sweeps going away just because the networks have trained audiences to always expect new programming during November, February, and May.

I don't think it was intended to be that way. It was for logistic reasons in my opinion, mostly related with Shakira's pregnancy and also related with giving Blake Shelton and Adam Levine an hiatus. I have seen contestants stating that some of the early portion of this season of the voice was recorded at the same time as the late season 3 live shows, exactly due to shakira's pregnancy. I think that was the reason. Next year, it may happen again, due to the olympics, but other than that I doubt we will see it happening again.

I think next year it's supposed to premiere at the end of February, right when the Olympics ends.

Yeah that makes even more sense then. My point was just that, if anything, next year we could also see a different schedule because of the Olympics but apparently not even that is going to happen!
