Spotted Ratings, Premiere Saturday 9/28/13

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Quite a few pilot encores inhabited the first Saturday of the season. CBS' early numbers were likely a bit inflated by the huge LSU/Georgia game they had in the late afternoon. In the primetime football race, ABC easily handled another nationally uninteresting Pac-12 game on Fox.

First Two Weeks, Brooklyn Nine-Nine

WEEK ONE
Brooklyn Nine-Nine got off to a pretty good start, with a 2.6 demo that outrated both of Fox's New Girl-fueled premieres from last season (Ben and Kate (2.1) and The Mindy Project (2.4)) even though it had a much lesser lead-in from the Dads premiere (2.2). It comfortably outrated both Dads and The Mindy Project (1.9) within the block. The bad news was that like Dads, it faced virtually nothing: a rebroadcast of Iron Man 2 on ABC (1.0 in the 8:00 hour), CBS' NCIS repeat (1.4) and NBC's The Million Second Quiz (1.1).

The Question, Tuesday 10/1/13: Will The Goldbergs Have a Golden Week Two?

Just to mix it up, on the season's second Tuesday I thought I'd visit that other ABC premiere that went pretty high. If you wanted an Agents of SHIELD Question, well... that's still important when you're trying to guess how far lead-out The Goldbergs drops from last week's 3.1 premiere. I say SHIELD comes down a good bit almost regardless of viewer reception. The premiere was so effectively sold as a live TV event, and (especially with Cote De Pablo leaving NCIS) that kind of level seems hard to sustain. But it'll stay high enough to keep The Goldbergs at a nice-looking raw number for now.

Over/Under: 2.55.

First Two Weeks, Dads

WEEK ONE
Dads was one of the season's worst-reviewed new shows, but that didn't stop a somewhat reasonable audience from showing up for the premiere. It averaged a 2.2 demo on pre-premiere Tuesday, though it faced virtually nothing: a rebroadcast of Iron Man 2 on ABC (1.0 in the 8:00 hour), CBS' NCIS repeat (1.4) and NBC's The Million Second Quiz (1.1). Though its newbie teammate Brooklyn Nine-Nine built by a few ticks at 8:30, Dads was not the weakest comedy of Fox's lineup. It did outrate weakling The Mindy Project (1.9).

The Question, Monday 9/30/13: Will a New Group of Men Save CBS Monday?

If you thought CBS' Premiere Monday ratings were disappointing, good news: HELP IS ON THE WAY from new show We Are Men, which premieres tonight in the 8:30 slot occupied last week by How I Met Your Mother. ...or not. We Are Men is a single-cam on laugh track-happy CBS and among the season's most panned new shows. It's got the direct HIMYM lead-in but so did last year's DOA Partners (2.4). With a bigger-name cast, I don't see this doing much worse than last year's already very weak premiere. But it'll be tough to do any better either. So I'm going a touch below Partners.

Over/Under: 2.25.
