2018 Upfront Questions: The CW

Part two of the upfront preview is the SCHEDULE-centric portion, examining the big-picture scheduling questions each network faces on each night in the final week before its upfront.

On each night, you can see the network's average 2017-18 ratings with its most frequent occupant in three different sub-sections of the year: "fall" (premiere week through December 31), "winter" (January 1 to the beginning of Daylight Saving Time) and "spring" (the start of DST through Thursday, May 3). You can also switch from the A18-49 ratings to the True ratings, which should make the comparisons across nights and across the season a bit more fair.

Part two of the upfront preview is the SCHEDULE-centric portion, examining the big-picture scheduling questions each network faces on each night in the final week before its upfront.

On each night, you can see the network's average 2016-17 ratings with its most frequent occupant in three different sub-sections of the year: "fall" (premiere week through December 31), "winter" (January 1 to the beginning of Daylight Saving Time) and "spring" (the start of DST through Thursday, May 4). You can also switch from the A18-49 ratings to the True ratings, which should make the comparisons across nights and across the season a bit more fair.

Schedules Plus Enhanced: CW Friday

Schedules Plus is the ultimate almanac to broadcast network primetime scheduling since 2001. It features lineups for three different parts of the year, as well as A18-49+ ratings that more fairly account for historical decline. For more on the tables and charts in Schedules Plus, see this primer.

This post covers CW Friday. Originally home to the WWE's SmackDown! franchise, CW Friday has often been a dumping ground since then. The network infamously exiled staples Smallville and Supernatural to the night at the height of Dawn Ostroff's obsession with courting the young female demos. In 2015-16, the network saw its best Friday ratings since those shows left, moving Thursday fixture The Vampire Diaries and spin-off The Originals. See the 2025-26 Breakdown.

Schedules Plus Enhanced: CW Sunday

Schedules Plus is the ultimate almanac to broadcast network primetime scheduling since 2001. It features lineups for three different parts of the year, as well as A18-49+ ratings that more fairly account for historical decline. For more on the tables and charts in Schedules Plus, see this primer.

This post covers CW Sunday, a night of programming that has literally gone extinct. While UPN didn't nationally program Sunday night, the WB did so pretty successfully with genre drama Charmed. So the powers that be tried to keep the night alive after the CW merger. Unfortunately, the un-cancelled 7th Heaven had nowhere near the power of Charmed in the inaugural season. And things got exponentially more embarrassing in the next two seasons. First, they had megaflop family drama Life is Wild, then they sold the night to Media Rights Capital, whose two dramas were as weak as anything we've ever seen on a big-five network. Starting in 2009-10, the CW gave up on trying to nationally program the night and gave it back to the affiliates. That departure lasted nearly a decade, but ended in 2018-19 with Supergirl and Charmed, a reboot of the CW's last reliable Sunday anchor. See the 2025-26 Breakdown.

Schedules Plus Enhanced: CW Thursday

Schedules Plus is the ultimate almanac to broadcast network primetime scheduling since 2001. It features lineups for three different parts of the year, as well as A18-49+ ratings that more fairly account for historical decline. For more on the tables and charts in Schedules Plus, see this primer.

This post covers CW Thursday. It's been right with Wednesday among the CW's best weeknights, thanks to consistently great 8/7c anchors. In this case, there was a seamless transition from Smallville to The Vampire Diaries in 2009. The TVD tradition ended as the show headed for Friday during its seventh season. But an even older tentpole has stepped in for it, with Supernatural inhabiting the night since 2016. See the 2025-26 Breakdown.

Schedules Plus Enhanced: CW Wednesday

Schedules Plus is the ultimate almanac to broadcast network primetime scheduling since 2001. It features lineups for three different parts of the year, as well as A18-49+ ratings that more fairly account for historical decline. For more on the tables and charts in Schedules Plus, see this primer.

This post covers CW Wednesday. It's been a decent night for the network pretty much throughout its existence, with reality hit America's Next Top Model anchoring the evening in the first few years and superhero drama Arrow taking over almost immediately after Top Model finally collapsed. But both Top Model and Arrow have struggled to launch series at 9/8c; the night was actually at its very best in 2015-16, when old reliable Supernatural did the 9/8c dirty work. See the 2025-26 Breakdown.

Schedules Plus Enhanced: CW Tuesday

This post covers CW Tuesday. If you want to know how the CW managed to come back from its early-2010s low point, look no farther than this night. In the network's first seven years, the network only occasionally had even passable Tuesday ratings: like when Gilmore Girls was there in the inaugural season, or very early in the run of 90210. But the launch of The Originals took the night to an unprecedented level in 2013-14, and it's flown into the stratosphere with The Flash: the CDub's biggest series ever.  See the 2025-26 Breakdown.

Schedules Plus Enhanced: CW Monday

Schedules Plus is the ultimate almanac to broadcast network primetime scheduling since 2001. It features lineups for three different parts of the year, as well as A18-49+ ratings that more fairly account for historical decline. For more on the tables and charts in Schedules Plus, see this primer.

This post covers CW Monday. Home to huge drama 7th Heaven on the WB and a successful African-American comedy block on UPN, it has proven a far tougher night for the CW to crack. Its only real period of ratings success was the prime years of Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill in the late aughts. Since then, the network has tried keeping the female-skewing tradition going, usually with far less success. Two years of Supergirl did as well as anything on Monday in CW history, but bad lead-outs held back the nightly averages. See the 2025-26 Breakdown.
