Coming off a relatively weak season last year, there was no real bounce-back in the cards for Hell's Kitchen. However, it did get a somewhat stronger lead-out in the fall, with Special Forces: World's Toughest Test pulling the nightly average into a narrow positive.

It's always an adventure to see which of the Gordon Ramsay shows will get more episodes in the winter window; this time, Hell's was done by January 22 and Next Level got back earlier, helping it to hold up a bit better than Hell's average-wise. Once again, the 9/8c hour came to the rescue for Fox, with Animal Control getting a surprise boost at 9/8c.

Thanks to an Olympic break and a couple other interruptions, the 9/8c comedies had to air about a month deeper into the spring this year, and the duo was a little below last year's Farmer Wants a Wife.

Hell's Kitchen: Not much worse than last year, but last year was already on the soft side. No real sign that we're returning to a world where this show can post consistent league average-ish ratings. Grade: C+.

Animal Control: 62 average on Thursday, +14% from last year. Another one of the surprisingly strong comedy trends, alongside the likes of St. Denis Medical and Shifting Gears. It's on a smaller scale in terms of total audience, but in terms of percentage it's a bigger bounce than even those two. It's sort of like the last season of Home Economics, in that I kinda feel like I can't give an A type of grade to a show that is just crawling up to being barely borderline. But unlike Home Ec, this show will very much get to prove whether it's actually catching on. It's getting a massive upgrade all the way to the penthouse, the 8:30 post-Simpsons slot during football season. Grade: B+.

Going Dutch: The Animal Control heat didn't really extend to Going Dutch, which had worse retention of the stronger lead-in, but that lead-in still dragged it to narrow year-to-year Plus growth in its second and final season. Grade: C+.
