The Breakdown: Fox Thursday in 2018-19 (Gotham, The Orville)

It's time for a journey through the Fox Thursday schedule in 2018-19...

Fox's first big step in the transition to New Fox was its pickup of Thursday Night Football, previously on CBS/NBC. It did what football does, blowing away everything in the entertainment realm, and was even up a tick in raw from its last CBS/NBC season.

Evicted from the fall schedule by football, the fall 2017 drama duo of Gotham and The Orville returned for a winter launch in 2019, where they paled in comparison to last year's reality competition The Four.

But they found themselves on more favorable comparison ground in the spring, as the final episodes of Gotham stayed close to last year's levels and The Orville was an upgrade on last year's reality filler.

Gotham: On the whole it was not massively weaker than last season, but it fell into flop territory for the first time and unfortunately limped to the finish with a couple 0.5's. The timeslot difficulty was pretty similar year-to-year, as this abbreviated season didn't get to air in the fall but also avoided May. Grade: C.

The Orville: Huge year-to-year drop, but the majority of it is explained by timeslot reasons; it had two NFL previews in season one (both much bigger than the one it got this year), and it aired in fall last year vs. winter-spring this year. It gets some credit for continuing to build on Gotham and keeping itself in the conversation, as it looked like it could be much worse when it had a 0.6 in early January. It also maintained a rather uniquely male-skewing and high-DVR audience. But it was clearly a borderline case for New Fox, and the network treated it that way by initially renewing, then sending season three off to Hulu. Grade: C+.
