The Breakdown: NBC Monday in 2016-17 (The Voice, Timeless, Taken and more!)

It's time for a journey through the NBC Monday schedule in 2016-17...

Compared with the fall 2015 season which held up incredibly well at the end, The Voice had some minor slippage in its Monday episodes. (But riding the This Is Us wave, it was actually up on Tuesday.) However, as with ABC, the 10/9c hour became an eyesore as Timeless comparisons with Blindspot were ghastly throughout the fall.

As its former host became president, Celebrity Apprentice returned to the airwaves to what were generally deemed disappointing ratings (albeit a lot better than last year's The Biggest Loser). Timeless held on to a 0.9 for most of its run with an Apprentice lead-in, but a couple particularly ugly points left it as an apparent underdog heading into the upfronts.

Now compared with a more realistic season of The Voice, the spring season was able to uptick a bit in Plus. But things went from bad to worse as co-production Taken took over. (The first bit of these shows' seasons are chopped off because they were before DST, but you can see the full averages below.) Still, Taken's comparisons with Blindspot were actually not as bad, because Blindspot fell so hard in the second half of season one.

The Voice Fall: It was down 4% in Plus but actually up a few points from the fall season two years ago. This Is Us probably gets some of the credit for the Tuesday growth, but that was nice too. Grade: B.

Celebrity Apprentice: Comparing Schwarzenegger Apprentice with Donald Trump's final season in 2015 makes for an ugly look; that one had a career-high 113 Plus, and in a fairly apples-to-apples timeslot. This season did outrate the previous couple seasons in 2012 and 2013, but they had tougher conditions. Overall, it was a disappointment to be sure, but it doesn't look as bad as I would've expected when comparing with the pre-2015 seasons. Grade: C-.

The Voice Spring: If the fall season had the misfortune of getting compared against a really strong Voice season, this one has the good fortune of getting compared against one of the show's very weakest seasons. Bouncing back from last year is good but it still ranks a bit behind most other Voice spring seasons. The moral of these two seasons is that while many reality staples are growing, this one is staying more closely aligned with the league average declines. Grade: B.

Timeless: I cautioned during the fall that The Blacklist and Blindspot were such successes that Timeless had a lot of room to go below them and still get renewed. It also had pretty good DVR numbers. But I was off the train with the 0.6 and 0.7 in February. So was NBC, briefly, but then came a reprieve for a short spring/summer run in 2018. Not one that I feel too bad about missing. Grade: C-.

Taken: This is definitely not one you can chalk up to "wait for the DVR numbers to tell the story"; it was worse than Timeless in Live+SD and way worse in delayed ratings. But apparently due to costs and/or international interest, it was the easier renewal, and will join another ex-Voice lead-out Blindspot on Friday. Grade: D.

Here's the now updated Schedules Plus for NBC Monday.
