Rating the Ratings: Though NCIS: Los Angeles actually dropped a few points less than its NCIS mothership lead-in this season, I'm not giving it a better grade. Its competition was simply easier; The Goldbergs and Trophy Wife were far preferable opponents to Agents of SHIELD, and NBC's midseason comedies made things even easier. It took nearly four and a half seasons, but NCIS: Los Angeles did finally air its first-ever episode without an original NCIS lead-in. And it held up well (2.4), but the holiday special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer pulled almost the exact same demo as a typical NCIS ep (3.0). It'll have to get used to no NCIS as it heads to Monday 10/9c next fall following the unproven Scorpion. That (plus how NCIS: New Orleans compares in the Tuesday 9/8c slot) may tell us more about this show's actual strength than we know from five full seasons. Grade: C+.

This is the biggest reason I worry for LA. If has had no big 4 drama competiton for two years. Now it will have to face ALL drama competition.

As for this season I wouldn't knock it for weak competiton. It had that last year. Weak ABC comedies, W18-34 heavy FOX, comedies, and Voice propped up comedies. I say B-
If I were CBS, I'd be buckling up. The last time a long-running, highly compatible pair like this was broken up (CSI-W/out A Trace) the lead-out dropped by nearly 40%. I could see that happening if Scorpion's a dud.
