Spotted Ratings, Wednesday 8/27/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The finale of Motive (0.9) was up for the second straight week (and was actually a tick above last season's finale), though it had some help from another very strong night of ABC comedy repeats. I thought Motive was toast in season one, but it survived and has actually dropped (just barely) less than the league average in its season two move to Wednesday. I still wouldn't consider it totally safe, but it doesn't really look any worse than last year.
  • Meanwhile, competing drama Taxi Brooklyn (0.7) and its America's Got Talent lead-in (1.8) were each down again to new lows.

Motive may be another Rookie Blue: a cheap Canadian import that ABC could run ad nauseam as a replacement for a soapy drama. More concerning, though, is Taxi Brooklyn; the show's hitting new lows even though a weaker AGT is at least half a point stronger than past lead-ins. No way that this show gets a season 2 if Camp never even fell this low.

At least SYTYCD bounced back into the low 1's.

SYTYCD needs to maintain that for the rest of the season. That .9 was scary.

I think this may be a very positive year for ABC Wednesday. I just wish they could have pushed Nashville and used this momentum to launch a new drama in the fall...

They are actually launching something, Black-ish!

I think they could shelve it at midseason and launch something there. I think it's too risky to launch so much stuff in the fall, it's better to focus promotional resources somewhere.
They already have 6 shows, 1 shows that is practically new (Resurrection) and 4 timeslot moves to advertise.
Besides, by launching at midseason they could first test whether or not Blackish is a good lead-in. If it's another flop, it would be a waste of a new show to air it there and it would doom it.

But yes, I agree that this year is looking very positive for ABC Wednesday!

Those ABC reruns are absolutely killing it. It's a bit insane that it's the only night where they go 100% repeat form 8 to 10 and that it's their 2nd best night of the summer.

Big Brother has been so remarkably consistent this season. Is it currently on track to have its highest season in A18-49+?

If ABC wants to continue w/ what I presume is a low budget (co?)production that nonetheless is probably doing better than Nashville repeats, then I see no reason why Motive wouldn't be safe.

(of course, that means it's all down to ABC's whims, which can be inscrutable some...well, a lot of times)

And Black-ish feels like a show that could bomb *hard*.
