Spotted Ratings, Sunday 8/3/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Because of the importance of matchups, it's generally folly to compare individual NFL results (especially individual preseason NFL results). But the Hall of Fame Game (2.8) didn't get the NFL off to a very promising start in 2014-15; it was 26% below last year's 3.8, though last year's game had the always potent Dallas Cowboys Effect at play. This was still ahead of all the other preseason games last year.
  • The CBS lineup was bumped seven minutes by a golf overrun, which may have been a factor in two-tenth drops for Big Brother (2.0) and Unforgettable (0.8).
  • Cable numbers added below, and WGN America's Manhattan (0.05, which rounds down to 0.0) pulled off something you don't see every day: a seventy-four percent week-to-week decline. I know percent changes can get wacky with numbers this small, but it was already starting from a bad number last week. Geez.

I know CBS has a no preempting 60 Minutes for anything less than the Superbowl policy, but I can't see the upside of not shaving 7 minutes from a repeat so the rest of the original lineup can start on time? I see none

Sometimes I feel that whatever stuff networks repeat on Saturdays is pure random. Why is FOX airing repeats of Gang Related which is very likely to be cancelled?! Surely they would have been better off airing more repeats of B99 or Mindy Project or even Sleepy Hollow yet again. At least they would be promoting a returning show.

Good gravy, Manhattan is essentially a CBS drama on a cable network. With that rating and that skew, it should be pulled off the sked yesterday.

They repeated Almost Human for months after it was off the schedule! Didn't they also repeat Lie to Me and the Chicago Code during the summer after they were cancelled too?

Why did ABC think it was good to repeat Shield against Guardians of the Galaxy? They did the same thing with Captain America 2

My best guess is that rerunning the show helps amortize the cost of production. Granted it's not like the show would get top dollar, but the bean counters at the net probably whispered that this helps the show from being a total money drag.

Salem also had a huge drop in week 2, but I expected Manhattan to hold better. It was much better reviewed and in my opinion better show

That's probably an instance of ABC thinking that increased interest in a Marvel product (Guardians) would translate to wanting to watch another product in their line (SHIELD). It's not competition, it's "synergy."

I think that's a sad argument because it would mean that networks were trying to maximize the profits for show X (Gang Related in this instance) instead of the profits for the network as a whole. Not only would one of the other alternatives probably rate slightly better, hence immediately increasing profits and also allowing for the argument of helping to amortize overall costs of production, but it would also increase the odds, regardless of by how little, of said returning shows' originals rating higher in the future and thus increasing profits further.

My point is that there is no argument I can think of in terms of rerunning Gang Related that couldn't be made about rerunning any other returning shows, with the difference being that there are extra arguments to air those returning shows

Halt and Catch Fire into a Low Viewers Sun ratings territory. And ground to a halt, I suppose. Yes, AMC renewed Turn with as low as 0.38 A18-49 average, but H&CF average is probably well bellow 0.3.

I wouldn't say "maximizing profits" in this case so much as "limiting losses," but I get your point. Your argument, though, works the other way: rerunning a new show like Gang Related on a different night could, in theory, help attract new viewers to the show's regular timeslot and create a more profitable show. But because Saturday is so low-priority (to borrow an example from your original example, I imagine Sleepy Hollow would only do a tenth better than Gang Related) this is just playing around at the margins.

Plus, reading some repeat scheduling tea leaves shows Fox's real priorities: Sleepy Hollow is getting extra exposure on a weeknight (Thursday) while Brooklyn Nine-Nine is getting Family Guy rerun lead-ins on Tuesday. Although in the latter case, why is 9-9 not also at x:30 on Sundays after The Simpsons or Family Guy?

Spot said...

Maybe they're selling Sunday ad space exclusively to advertisers interested in M18-34, so they didn't want to rock the boat with putting 9-9 in the mix. For now, as they will do so in September with B99 and Mulaney.
Just a wild guess from my side, but it could explain such a scheduling.

Spot said...

Well yeah that's true about trying to get more viewers for GR, I give you that, I was just speaking under the assumption that Gang Related was already a lost cause.

I also agree with you in terms of figuring out what FOX's priorities are, although to be honest, what else do they have? Bones is 10 years old and I won't even speak about Family Guy and The Simpsons. The Following is only coming back at midseason and reruns awfully anyway. There's only Sleepy Hollow, Mind, New Girl and B99 left and I suppose they see more potential with the fresher B99 and Sleepy Hollow than Mindy and New Girl.

Went back to this post because I saw on August 16th FOX is repeating GLEE on Saturday after it being off the schedule three months.

Spot said...

Ahah, I am now 100% convinced that it is 100% random!

Spot said...

The contract between the show's studio and network put a limit on the amount of times episodes can be re-run.

Spot said...

CBS does not and will never care that you have to wait 7 minutes or 43 minutes for your program. It cares about the advertising it sold.
