The Question, Monday 12/17/12: How Good is NBC's Penn-manship?

Tonight NBC airs its fourth different Monday Voice lead-out in as many weeks. We've covered drama, holiday special and game show already. This one is a comedy, the White House-set 1600 Penn, in a sneak preview before it begins its regular run in the post-Office slot in January. It's not gonna have much support on Thursday, so it may need to pick up some folks in this airing. How good is NBC's Penn-manship? That's The Question for Monday, December 17, 2012.

The Voice In Recent Weeks Voice Monday Lead-Outs
4.2 (11/26/12, two hours)
3.9 (12/3/12, two hours)
3.8 (12/10/12, one hour)
2.5 (The New Normal, 9/10/12)
2.9 (Revolution fall finale, 11/26/12)
2.7 (Blake Shelton's Not So Family Christmas, 12/3/12)
2.2 (Take It All, 12/10/12)

Some of the reviews are pretty positive for this show, but the promos have not looked appealing (to me anyway). I actually feel like this may be a worse fit with The Voice than something like Take It All. But there are two benefits: it's only a half-hour (giving The Voice viewers less time to bail) and it airs at the bottom of the hour, making it a little harder to change the channel. The Voice may be up a bit since it's finale week. So I see numbers in the general Go On and Take It All range.

Over/Under: 2.35.

Over. If not, it's a complete disaster for NBC.

That said, the promos were amazingly, aggressively awful, which doesn't make much sense considering the actual show has received a fairly lukewarm reception from critics. NBC really needs to sort out its marketing department.

I also suspect the premise might be off-putting to a significant chunk of the public. Politics is a sensitive issue, especially so soon after the election.

That said, something is badly wrong if NBC can't get half-decent ratings for a heavily-promoted pilot of a family comedy after The Voice.

Also, a few previous 9:30 premieres:
Premiere of Samantha Who on October 17 2007 at 9:30: 4.5 in 18-49 out of a 4.6 DWTS lead-in (98% retention)
Premiere of I Hate My Teenage Daughter on December 1 2011 at 9:30: 2.8 in 18-49 out of a 3.7 X Factor lead-in (76% retention)
Premiere of Breaking In on April 7 2011 at 9:30: 3.5 in 18-49 out of a 6.8 American Idol lead-in (51% retention)

Under. Basing that mostly on the promos - they looked awful, even less appealing than Animal Practice and Guys With Kids.
