First Two Weeks, Go On

WEEK ONE
Go On was the first official scripted series premiere of the 2012-13 season, making its Tuesday 9/8c debut during the pre-pre-premiere week on September 11. It pulled a 3.4 demo and held most of its lead-in from The Voice (which averaged a 4.0 overall and a 4.3 in the 8:30 half-hour). Considering NBC's highest-rated scripted show last season averaged a 2.77, that's a pretty promising start despite the relative lack of competition.

Spotted Ratings, Thursday 9/20/12: An Off-ul Beginning

WHAT MATTERS:
  • There may have been some signs of promise on the first two nights of NBC's week, but... it seems they're still NBC after all. The two-hour comedy block got off to a catastrophic start on pre-premiere week Thursday, with The Office leading the way at 9/8c but only managing to tie the season/series low point. It's down nearly half from the year-ago premiere! The return of Thursday Saturday Night Live election specials led off the night and literally managed less than a third of the demo audience they got when NBC first tried this in 2008. Up All Night and Parks and Recreation rounded out the bottoms of the hours with near-lowest ever performances. Yeeeesh. (Silver lining: the Up All Night result in particular may be a good omen for Community fans.)
  • On Fox, The X Factor made it a fourth straight night for the singing shows on the upside vs. last week. Glee came down a couple tenths from last week's premiere.
  • Elsewhere, Wipeout limped to the finish, down almost half from the year-ago finale and wrapping up a -20% summer overall. The NFL Network's Thursday Night Football (3.0) was weaker than last week's 3.8 premiere but I'd have expected even worse considering the blowout and less intriguing matchup.

The Question, Thursday 9/20/12: How Far Off is The Office?

Tonight, NBC becomes the first network of 2012-13 to premiere its two-hour comedy block. This block of low-rated returnees has deservedly been much-maligned from a ratings standpoint. It seems quite likely that the final season of The Office will remain the highest-rated of that bunch, but continued struggles in its final season will spell certain ugliness for everyone else in the Thursday block. How far off is The Office as it begins the final season? That's The Question for Thursday, September 20, 2012.
