Cablemetrics: South Park, American Horror Story, Vice Principals, Better Things

These numbers are current through Monday, September 18.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Comedy Central's veterans South Park (0.96) and Broad City (0.51) teamed up on Wednesday, with South Park still near the top of the cable rankings but giving back all of its big premiere night growth from last year. It did give a nice boost to Broad City, which was +11% from last year's premiere (when it didn't have such a lead-in).

Cablemetrics: American Horror Story, South Park, Atlanta, Better Things

These numbers are current through Wednesday, September 14.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • FX had the headline of the cable ratings week with an incredibly strong return from American Horror Story (2.78) at 10/9c. Despite the show's massive collapse last season (as low as a 0.85, and frequently in the vicinity of -30% year-to-year), the franchise somehow pulled itself all the way back to within 7% of last year's inflated premiere. This is AHS, so another collapse is probably coming, but it's kinda hard to imagine it being worse than last year. Even if it's exactly as bad as last year, that means -7% for the season, which would be extremely healthy!

Cablemetrics: Doctor Who, The Bastard Executioner, Switched at Birth, The Haves and the Have Nots

These numbers are current through Thursday, September 24.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The only new entry this week is the veteran British import Doctor Who (0.87), which continued to show year-to-year growth for BBC America. Being up another 2% from last year's premiere is pretty impressive considering the year-ago premiere was introducing a new Doctor. If last year was any indication, this show won't stay in the cable upper echelon; the 2014 season shed half of that 0.85 premiere in the next two weeks. But maybe this season can hold up better since there shouldn't be as much "new Doctor" inflation in week one?

Schedule Five-Spot, WE 11/20/11 - Rules of Engagement, A Gifted Man, Survivor, Dexter, South Park

Phew! The news just seems to come in bunches. This one is mostly about CBS' midseason announcements but touches on a couple other things too. Here's my third and final Schedule Five-Spot for the week ending November 20, 2011:

Rules of Engagement - OK, so I know CBS likes to be particularly retentionista with their comedies, but does Rules of Engagement really deserve to have its episode count trimmed? I don't have any delusions that the show is Truly as strong as its raw numbers indicate, but my metric still has the show a little stronger than most of CBS' second tier of mostly "safe" dramas. If an expansion of comedy is nigh (and it should be), I'd want to have this around.
