FINALS UPDATE: 1969 (0.3) and
Mental Samurai (0.4) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- With a lead-in from The Village (0.6), the two-hour season finale of The Voice (1.0/1.1) picked up little to no ground from last week, and was down about 30% from the year-ago spring finale.
- It was NCIS (1.2), not Voice, that was the top program on the last Tuesday of the season, and it was used as a lead-in for the two-hour premiere of summer drama Blood and Treasure (0.6). B&T at least so far is probably looking a little better than Salvation, CBS' last effort in the summer drama realm. (It premiered to a 0.7 after Big Brother two years ago, and never got higher than 0.4 all of last season.)
- On finale night, ABC saw a decrease for American Housewife (0.7) but an increase for Black-ish (0.7) and 1969 (0.4). Fox's unscripted (0.8/0.5) was up, while the CW's The 100 fell to its first 0.2 of the season as The Flash (0.2) went into repeats.
FINALS UPDATE: The Flash (0.6) adjusted up.
WHAT MATTERS:- NBC's The Voice (1.0) got out of fractional territory for the first time since moving to the 9/8c hour, and helped New Amsterdam (0.9) to rise for its season finale. The Village remained at 0.6 at 8/7c.
- On ABC, Black-ish (0.6) returned to the 9/8c slot and Bless This Mess (0.6) to 9:30, while the 8/7c comedies (0.8/0.6) were even and 1969 fell to its first 0.3. CBS was up with NCIS (1.1) but down with NCIS: New Orleans (0.6), and Fox's Mental Samurai hit a new low 0.4. The CW (0.5/0.3) was even.
FINALS UPDATE: No adjustments.
WHAT MATTERS:- ABC gave Bless This Mess (0.6) a one-time tryout in the 9/8c half-hour, where it matched the 0.6 it pulled last week at 9:30. In the 8:00 hour, American Housewife (0.8) and The Kids Are Alright (0.6) both gave back last week's upticks.
- The rest of broadcast brought another mix of evenness and one-tenth downticks. CBS was down a notch with NCIS (to a new low 1.0) and FBI (0.8), while NBC's The Village (0.6) and Fox's unscripted shows (0.7/0.5) all surrendered their gains from last week.
FINALS UPDATE: FBI (0.9) and
MasterChef Junior (0.8) adjusted up while
Bless This Mess (0.6) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- The CBS dramas (1.1/0.8/0.7) returned with a decline for FBI, tying the show for its series low.
- ABC was up with its first hour of American Housewife (0.9) and The Kids Are Alright (0.7), with Housewife getting up to 0.9 for the first time since February. Black-ish (0.7), Bless This Mess (0.7) and 1969 (0.4) matched last week.
- NBC was also up at 8/7c with The Village (0.7) and even later in the night with The Voice (0.9) and New Amsterdam (0.8). Fox bucked the trend by declining at 8/7c with MasterChef Junior (0.7) but growing to 0.6 for the first time in a month with Mental Samurai.
- And the CW featured the return of already-renewed The 100 (0.3) following The Flash (0.5). The 100 was down a tenth from last season's premiere (which was also in late April).
FINALS UPDATE: The Kids Are Alright (0.6),
The Flash (0.5) and
Roswell, New Mexico (0.2) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- ABC added sitcom Bless This Mess (0.9) to its Tuesday lineup at 9:30. It was the network's highest-rated show on a night in which everything else was up as well; American Housewife (0.8), The Kids Are Alright (0.7), Black-ish (0.8) and the 10/9c finale of The Rookie (0.7) all picked up a tenth from last week. BTM tied previous occupant Splitting Up Together's highest rating of the season (from all the way back in October), while Black-ish had its first 0.8 in almost two months.
- Things got even uglier on NBC, down across the board with The Voice (1.0), The Village (0.6) and New Amsterdam (0.6).
- CBS' NCIS (1.1) inched down, but the return of FBI (0.9) at 9/8c helped NCIS: New Orleans (0.7) to rebound at 10/9c. Fox (0.7/0.5) was even and the CW was up with The Flash (0.6) and Roswell, New Mexico (0.3).
FINALS UPDATE: NCIS (1.2) adjusted up while
Mental Samurai (0.5) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- CBS had a weak preview for new drama The Code (0.7) at 9/8c, not even coming close to a typical episode of FBI in the hour. Next week, Code heads to the Monday 9/8c hour vacated by Magnum P.I. Its lead-in NCIS (1.1) was even, but NCIS: New Orleans (0.6) fell to a new low at 10/9c.
- NBC shook things up with the Tuesday return of The Voice (1.2) leading into the first 9/8c episode of The Village (0.7). It couldn't improve upon its last couple airings after This Is Us, and worse yet it helped tank the return of New Amsterdam (0.7) at 10/9c; it went three tenths below the 1.0 it's pulled for every previous 2019 episode.
- ABC's bookends American Housewife (0.7) and The Rookie (0.6) both inched down, while The Kids Are Alright (0.6), Black-ish (0.7) and Splitting Up Together (0.6) were even. Fox's unscripted (0.7/0.6) was even again, and Roswell, New Mexico returned to 0.2 after a repeat lead-in.
FINALS UPDATE: NCIS (1.2) and
This Is Us (1.7) adjusted up.
WHAT MATTERS:- Week two of The Village (0.7) dropped a tenth from last week, as did its lead-in This Is Us (1.6). It was the same for the other week two newbie, Fox's Mental Samurai (0.6), which was down alongside MasterChef Junior (0.7).
- ABC (0.8/0.6/0.6/0.6/0.7) matched all of last week's preliminaries (though The Kids Are Alright later adjusted up to a 0.7 last week). CBS (1.1/0.9/0.7) was even vs. two weeks ago, but the CW's Roswell, New Mexico was back down to 0.2 with a repeat The Flash lead-in (0.2).
FINALS UPDATE: The Kids Are Alright (0.7) adjusted up while
The Village (0.8) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- NBC premiered this year's spring heir to the This Is Us timeslot, new drama The Village (0.9), at 10/9c, where it held barely half of the This Is Us (1.7) lead-in. On premiere night, it couldn't even get to the 1.0 New Amsterdam has been pulling here all year; it's possible to be weaker than New Amsterdam and still successful, but it has little cushion to work with here. It was down 25% from the Rise premiere last spring, but This Is Us was down a whooping 39% from that same night.
- Fox had a premiere of its own with unscripted newbie Mental Samurai (0.7), which was down a tenth from its MasterChef Junior (0.8) lead-in (and in line with the second hour of MasterChef from last week).
- ABC's comedies (0.8/0.6/0.6/0.6) returned in rather ugly fashion after The Bachelor's stint in their timeslot; the first three were all down by two tenths from three weeks ago, making a steady Splitting Up Together look better by comparison. The closest thing to a winner on ABC was The Rookie (0.7), which held onto part of its post-Bachelor uptick from two weeks ago.
- CBS was repeats (0.7/0.6/0.5) and the CW preliminarily got a rebound from Roswell, New Mexico (0.3).
FINALS UPDATE: FBI (1.0) adjusted up while
The Gifted (0.4) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- NBC used its Tuesday premiere of The Voice (2.0) to launch a two-hour preview of World of Dance (1.4), before the former summer reality series makes the move to its regular Sunday timeslot at the end of the week. WoD was down just a bit in Plus from its season two premiere (1.7) after America's Got Talent (2.5).
- Finale night for Fox's Tuesday drama duo (0.7/0.5) saw Lethal Weapon inch back down to its usual 0.7.
- ABC had an uptick from its first three sitcoms, American Housewife (1.0), The Kids Are Alright (0.8) and Black-ish (0.8), but Splitting Up Together and The Rookie were stuck at 0.6. CBS (1.2/0.9/0.8) was even across the board, while Roswell, New Mexico fell to its first 0.2 leading out of a repeat of The Flash (0.2).
FINALS UPDATE: Roswell, New Mexico (R)
(0.1) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- This Is Us (1.8) had a rebound after last week's low, while its lead-in Ellen's Game of Games (1.4) was down a notch. NCIS (1.2) and FBI (0.9) were both down, as was Black-ish (0.7) (the lone mover on ABC). On Fox, Lethal Weapon (0.8) looked a little better than usual, pulling off its first 0.8 since week two of the season.
FINALS UPDATE: NCIS (1.4) adjusted up.
WHAT MATTERS:- ABC finally got a look at its full post-The Conners Tuesday. American Housewife (0.9) was up a tenth from last week's timeslot premiere on State of the Union night, while The Kids Are Alright (0.7) matched last week. Then Black-ish (0.8), Splitting Up Together (0.6) and The Rookie (0.6) were back for the first time in three weeks; Black-ish and Splitting matched that night, but The Rookie fell to 0.6 for just the second time (and the first time was when it had a delayed start on January 8).
- NBC's This Is Us (1.7) was also back from multiple weeks off, and fell pretty hard to a new series low. Ellen's Game of Games (1.5) had a small rebound from its SOTU airing last week, while New Amsterdam (1.0) was even with three weeks ago.
- On CBS, NCIS (1.3) had its first original in four weeks, and was even, while FBI (1.0) got back on track after a hiccup following Celebrity Big Brother three weeks ago. Fox (0.7/0.5) was even while CW's The Flash (0.6) preliminarily dropped to end a three-week run of 0.7's.
Here's a look at the big Renewology developments in week 20. After a couple weeks lacking in premieres, this week had actual developments! Plus, the thoughts promised
last week on a couple dramas that have been softening in the winter.
FINALS UPDATE: The Kids Are Alright (0.7),
The Masked Singer (R) (0.8) and
Roswell, New Mexico (0.3) adjusted down. (Please note that the numbers listed below for the State of the Union are the full preliminary averages; the only thing released in finals were the analysis portions.)
WHAT MATTERS:- The last two hours of East Coast primetime were dedicated to the State of the Union Address and Democratic response on the big four. As usual, NBC (1.6/1.3) dominated the other networks in this period, with an assist from an original Ellen's Game of Games lead-in (1.4).
- Despite the special programming later in the night, the 8/7c hour was not without its own developments in the entertainment world as American Housewife (0.8) made the move back to Tuesday, leading off at 8/7c. At least preliminarily, it skewed a lot older on its new night, crazily posting a new season high in total viewers but a new season low in the demo. (We'll see if any of that shifts due to SOTU coverage in other time zones.) Though it had a smaller lead-in than usual, The Kids Are Alright at least preliminarily held onto its usual 0.8 at 8:30.
- The CW stayed original all night with The Flash (0.7) and Roswell, New Mexico (0.4), and Roswell preliminarily bounced back from last week's downtick.
FINALS UPDATE: Celebrity Big Brother (1.3) and
The Flash (0.7) adjusted up while
The Kids Are Alright (0.8) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- Finale night for The Conners (1.5) saw a nice two-tenth bump for the series, and its lead-out The Kids Are Alright (0.9) was also up a notch. The growth ended there for ABC; Black-ish (0.8) and The Rookie (0.7) were even, sandwiching a down Splitting Up Together (0.6).
- Night two of Celebrity Big Brother (1.2) was two tenths lower than the Monday premiere. Though it had similar raw numbers to usual occupant NCIS, it was far less compatible with FBI (0.8), and that show plummeted to a new low at 9/8c. NCIS: New Orleans stayed at 0.8.
- Week two stayed promising for Roswell, New Mexico, which hung onto a 0.4 leading out of The Flash's 0.6 for the second straight week. (Roswell was down a tick in A18-34 and A25-54, and by about 20% in total viewers, so it may have taken some hit in the un-rounded.)
- NBC was down a tenth from last week with Ellen's Game of Games (1.6) and This Is Us (1.9), while The Gifted remained at 0.5 after a repeat of Lethal Weapon (0.5).
FINALS UPDATE: New Amsterdam (1.0) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- After 0.5, 0.3 and 0.2 for its series premieres in the fall, the CW added a 0.4 to the mix with new drama Roswell, New Mexico (0.4). It was a couple tenths behind its The Flash lead-in (0.6), making it a much less impressive premiere than what Black Lightning did here a year ago, but it was at the high end of what Black Lightning season two has been doing in the fall.
- NBC completed its winter lineup with the return of This Is Us (2.0) at 9/8c; while it was down a notch from the fall finale, it seemed to help out Ellen's Game of Games (1.7), which grew two tenths from last week's season premiere. New Amsterdam (1.1) was up a notch at 10/9c, matching what it was doing after TIU in the late fall.
- ABC was down in the 8/7c hour with The Conners (1.3) and especially with The Kids Are Alright (0.8), but Black-ish (0.8) and Splitting Up Together (0.7) matched last week's address-delayed ratings. Back to airing on time, The Rookie (0.7) was up a tenth.
- CBS' NCIS (1.3) grew a tenth from last week, while the delayed returns of FBI (1.0) and NCIS: New Orleans (0.8) both matched their fall finales. Fox's Lethal Weapon stayed at 0.7 while The Gifted dropped back to 0.5.
FINALS UPDATE: Black-ish (0.8) and
The Gifted (0.6) adjusted up while
NCIS: New Orleans (R) (0.5) adjusted down. (The address ratings were not released in finals; the prelims are still listed below.)
WHAT MATTERS:- The 8:00 hour saw the original return of last winter's unscripted smash Ellen's Game of Games (1.5). It took the victory in a tough 8/7c hour, but still looked to have softened even relative to its lowest points last winter. It was up against ABC's The Conners (1.4, matching its fall finale) and The Kids Are Alright (1.0, up a tenth), CBS' NCIS (1.2, down a tenth) and Fox's Lethal Weapon (0.7, matching last week).
- Then a presidential address and Democratic response threw a wrench into the 9:00 half-hour. The 20ish-minute interruption meant that ABC's Black-ish (0.7), Splitting Up Together (0.7) and The Rookie (0.6) along with Fox's The Gifted (0.5) all started late and aired in their entirety. The prelims do not match up exactly with when these shows aired, so stay tuned for finals.
- CBS took a different approach, pulling its scheduled originals of FBI and NCIS: New Orleans in favor of repeats (0.6/0.6). And NBC took a bit of a hybrid path, pulling the planned 9:00 original of Game of Games for a repeat joined in progress (1.4), but still airing an original New Amsterdam (1.0) at 10/9c.
FINALS UPDATE: The Rookie (0.8) and
Supergirl (0.8) adjusted up.
WHAT MATTERS:- It was fall finale night on ABC, which got one-tenth rebounds for comedies The Conners (1.4), The Kids Are Alright (0.9) and Splitting Up Together (0.7), and CBS, which was up a notch with NCIS (1.3) but down a notch at 10/9c with NCIS: New Orleans (0.8).
- NBC had another week of special programming after The Voice (1.4); this time, a one-hour Darci Lynne special (0.8) and Hollywood Game Night (0.5) did considerably worse than last week's SNL.
- And the CW finished up its three night crossover with Supergirl (0.7) hitting season high levels on a special night. Though this was basically the same as a normal The Flash rating, Black Lightning (0.4) still managed an uptick at 9/8c.
FINALS UPDATE: NCIS: New Orleans (0.9) adjusted up.
WHAT MATTERS:- On the first Tuesday after This Is Us and New Amsterdam wrapped for the fall, NBC was down from last week in both their timeslots with a two-hour Saturday Night Live Christmas special (1.1/0.9). Last year, the SNL Christmas special aired on December 21 and got a 1.2.
- Despite weaker competition, ABC's lineup lost a tenth across the board with The Conners (1.3), The Kids Are Alright (0.8), Black-ish (0.8), Splitting Up Together (0.6) and The Rookie (0.7). CBS' NCIS (1.2), FBI (1.0) and NCIS: New Orleans (0.8) all matched their last originals two weeks ago, and Fox was also even with The Gifted (0.7) and Lethal Weapon (0.7). The CW's The Flash (0.7) was the lone upticker.
FINALS UPDATE: This Is Us (2.1) and
The Gifted (0.7) adjusted up.
WHAT MATTERS:- The post-Thanksgiving upswing for broadcast continued into Tuesday, at least to some extent. NBC got another night of growth for The Voice (1.5) and a return to the twos for the This Is Us fall finale (2.0), while New Amsterdam (1.1) was even.
- ABC's The Conners (1.4) and The Kids Are Alright (0.9) matched last week's lows, but Black-ish (0.9), Splitting Up Together (0.7) and The Rookie (0.8) were all up a notch. Fox's Lethal Weapon (0.7) also pulled off an uptick.
- Repeats continued on CBS, starting with holiday classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1.7) at 8/7c which was down two tenths from last year. The CW (0.6/0.3) matched last week.
