The Breakdown: Fox Sunday in 2024-25 (The Simpsons, The Great North, Krapopolis and more!)

It's time for a journey through the Fox Sunday schedule in 2024-25...

New comedy Universal Basic Guys joined The Simpsons in the 8/7c hour, and like with Krapopolis last year Fox actually granted it the direct NFL lead-in at the top of the hour on a few occasions (with Simpsons at 8:30). Bob's Burgers looked pretty decent at 9/8c, but sophomore Krapopolis took big drops at 9:30.

The Simpsons sat out for the entire winter period, ceding the 8/7c anchor role to Family Guy which proved a significantly better option. The rest of the night also improved a touch, as a Krapopolis/Grimsburg flip saw Krapopolis retain better at 9:30.

The Simpsons was back for the spring, continuing its steady descent into the abyss. But at 8:30, Family Guy was once again there to rescue its own slot and usher in some upticks later in the night.

The Simpsons: The fall scheduling ultimately looked about the same as last year for The Simpsons, which had direct NFL lead-ins for three weeks and gave up four of them to the newbie, but it's still a chore to disentangle which particular NFL weeks were stronger. There was some more erosion in its spring ratings, and while no one year (including this one) looks catastrophic on its own, it's worth noting this show averaged an 83 Plus in the spring just seven years ago. What really stood out to me was how much stronger Family Guy looked by comparison when given the same slot. Grade: C.

Universal Basic Guys: Fox managed to manufacture a big hit average by giving this show a handful of direct NFL lead-ins and then getting it off the air before the brutal winter/spring periods arrived. I actually think you can maybe squint and make the case that it looked a little better than Krapopolis last fall, as it didn't get quite as low in the non-NFL weeks, but it's splitting hairs. Like NBC's Brilliant Minds, I perhaps kinda inflate its grade because it didn't get the chance to flop later in the season. Grade: C.

Family Guy: Last year it aired at 9:30 in the fall followed by bombing in a random 9:30 Wednesday run, so there are no clean comparisons here. (It's also thrown away some episodes on Thursdays this summer...) All we can say for sure is that it stood out quite noticeably relative to the other animation chaff in the post-New Year periods. Grade: B.

Grimsburg: It looked like the clear weak link last year. And that was probably still the case this year when comparing it with Krapopolis in the winter; it barely improved at 8:30 with a good lead-in, while Krapopolis retained much better than Grimsburg at 9:30. But perhaps not as clear of an eyesore as last year, so I guess that's something? Grade: D+.

Bob's Burgers: It definitely looked the best out of any of the foursome airing in the fall, holding steady at 9/8c while everything else dipped around it. Like Family Guy, it's since had to unload a bunch of episodes to poor results in the middle of the summer. Grade: B.

The Great North: It improved a bit, which I pretty much attribute to Family Guy lifting all boats. Overall, it's kinda settled in at this level for a few years now. Grade: C+.

Krapopolis: A mediocre performer but better retention at 9:30 compared to Grimsburg I guess. I'm tired. Grade: C-.
