Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 6/30/15

WHAT MATTERS:

• FINALS UPDATE: America's Got Talent (2.5) adjusted up, while Beat the Champions adjusted down to 0.9. The soccer game (3.0) averaged 8.4 million viewers and peaked at over 12 million from 8:30-8:45, so BtC had pretty horrible retention of whatever was left in the postgame coverage.

• The latest made-for-summer CBS drama Zoo opened with just over 8 million viewers and a 1.2 demo rating. This was far from a gaudy number but still represented a major improvement on the surrounding NCIS repeats, which were even weaker than usual (0.8 at 8:00, 0.7 for New Orleans at 10:00). But it was still another 25% behind last year's already modest Extant launch, which was itself less than half of what Under the Dome did two years ago.

• Fox had huge numbers from the tail end of the USA's semifinal in the Women's World Cup (a preliminary 3.3 from 8:00-9:00), but very little interest in lead-out special Beat the Champions (1.1). Champions took a prelim 3.4 lead-in rating at 8:30 and dropped to 1.4 at 9:00, then 0.8 at 9:30.

• Since last we spoke, America's Got Talent has had an impressive late June surge, growing to 2.6 for the first episode after the NBA Finals on June 23 and then coming back to 2.4 last night (with a 2.2 against the World Cup growing to 2.6 at 9:00). Both of these points were close to even with the similar part of last season. Its lead-out I Can Do That (1.4 last week, 1.5 last night) has also picked back up a bit since hitting a new low against the Finals.

• ABC has been completely off the map since the Finals with Extreme Weight Loss (0.7 last week and this week) and some even lower comedy repeats in the 8:00 hour, while Fox had a similarly regrettable Tuesday last week with Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (0.7) and a leftover World's Funniest Fails (0.5).

Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 6/16/15

WHAT MATTERS:

• FINALS UPDATE: The NBA Finals adjusted up to 8.9 with 23.25 million viewers, up by 1.3 points from the previous couple games. That's 31% above last year's Game 5 finale and a slightly better finale spike than last year's series. The soccer on Fox inched up to 1.8, as did America's Got Talent (2.3) to go even week-to-week.

• ABC's NBA Finals basketball wrapped up for the series with a preliminary 7.2 rating from 9:00-11:00, which is 10-15% above the low-6 prelims for recent games (which adjusted up to mid-7's). It'll probably adjust up more due to the championship moment coming after primetime, but a double digit average feels like a reach. Still, it'll easily destroy the 6.8 average for last year's finale.

• Fox was also in the sports business on this night with another USA group stage match in the Women's World Cup. It averaged a preliminary 1.7, two tenths above the Friday prelim 1.5 which adjusted up to a 1.6 final, despite the NBA competition preventing it from spiking in the 9:00 hour. (The Friday prelim breakdown was 1.3 -> 1.4 -> 1.6 -> 1.7; this one was 1.6 -> 1.8 -> 1.7 -> 1.6.)

• NBC's original lineup had to endure another big dose of sports. While America's Got Talent (2.2) held up OK again, I Can Do That (1.3) got slammed against the bigger NBA hour.

Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 6/9/15

WHAT MATTERS:

• FINALS UPDATE: The NBA Finals ended up at 18.77 million viewers and a 7.3 demo, each down just a smidge from Game 2 and still way ahead of the 2014 pace. Hell's Kitchen (1.1) adjusted up to avoid a new low, but iZombie didn't.

• The NBA Finals took its first crack at the Tuesday regulars, and it now looks likely it'll be in play again next week. NBC held up pretty well, with America's Got Talent (2.3) down just a tenth and a reasonable 12% behind the episode on this night last year. Its lead-out I Can Do That (1.6) preliminarily gained a tick back after last week's decline (though the 1.8 -> 1.4 half-hour breakdown is pretty ugly).

• On Fox, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (0.8) inched up, but the finale of Hell's Kitchen (1.0) dropped to a new low (and miles behind last year's 1.7 finale). And much like The 100 last year, iZombie (0.5) dropped for the last episode of its summer run, though with a 0.5 -> 0.6 breakdown it may be close to adjusting up.

• As for the NBA Finals, they hit a series high 13.7 in the household overnights and should be way up year-to-year again in the demo. The two-hour A18-49 prelim (5.8) was a touch better than Thursday's rating.

Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 6/2/15

WHAT MATTERS:

• Week two of America's Got Talent (2.4) was down two tenths from the premiere, with another year-to-year decline in the teens. Its new lead-out I Can Do That (1.5) took a steeper week two drop but still looks OK; it was even with the year-ago episode of The Night Shift.

• The losers on the opening summer Tuesday got no relief in their second outings; ABC's Extreme Weight Loss (0.8) and Fox's Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (0.7) each shed another tenth. Weight Loss, still down massively year-to-year (from a 1.2 on this night last year), tied its lead-in comedy hour of Fresh Off the Boat (0.8) and Black-ish (0.8).

• On the CW, iZombie held up well again, with another preliminary 0.6 leading out of a 0.4 The Flash repeat.

Spotted Ratings, Wednesday 5/27/15

WHAT MATTERS:

• FINALS UPDATE: The night's two biggest winners, MasterChef (1.6) and The Briefcase (1.4), each picked up another tenth in finals.

• CBS got into the summer original game with Wednesday 8/7c reality series The Briefcase (1.3), which had one of the network's more promising starts in this role that bridges the end of the regular season with the start of Big Brother. It was even with the 2012 premiere of Dogs in the City (1.3) and well above 2013's debut of The American Baking Competition (1.0).

• Fox had a more middling debut from its own new entry, the 9/8c reality series Bullseye (1.1). But they did have a major silver lining in that for the second straight year, MasterChef (1.5) shook off a bad premiere rating to grow significantly in week two. Even this point is down more than average year-to-year (it grew to 1.8 in week two of last season), but the season may not be in as much trouble as it appeared last week.

• The penultimate 500 Questions (1.0) inched down for ABC, while NBC had modest interest for an I Can Do That encore (0.7) and the two-hour iHeartRadio Country Festival (1.0).

Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 5/26/15

WHAT MATTERS:

• NBC kicked off another season of America's Got Talent (2.6) with a slightly larger-than-average drop from last year's 3.0 premiere. It also had a decent launch from unscripted lead-out I Can Do That (1.8), which was an improvement on last season's premiere of The Night Shift (1.6).

• On Fox, there was very little interest in the return of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (0.8), which only about matched the Plus it was doing for its last regular season run on Friday in 2008-09. Hell's Kitchen (1.1) also slumped.

• ABC had another OK result from 500 Questions (1.1), which handily beat 5th Grader at 8/7c. But the two-hour return of Extreme Weight Loss (0.9) was very weak, down a massive 31% from last year's premiere.

• And the CW began a three-week summer run of straggling originals for iZombie (0.6). Like back in week four, the show was even week-to-week despite not having an original The Flash lead-in, a much more promising look than the usual post-Flash delivery.
