Spotted Ratings, Friday 5/19/17

FINALS UPDATE: Undercover Boss (0.8) adjusted up while Movie: Maid in Manhattan (0.4), The Originals (0.2) and Reign (0.2) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The final Friday of the regular season brought not a single scripted original on the big four. CBS tried to mix it up to no avail with an I Love Lucy special (0.5) at 9/8c, leading out of Undercover Boss (0.7) and into a repeat of Blue Bloods (0.5).
  • NBC easily won the night with its usual First Dates (0.7) and Dateline (0.9/1.0), as Dates scored yet another victory over the two-hour finale of The Toy Box (0.5/0.6) on ABC. Fox had movie Maid in Manhattan (0.4/0.5).
  • The CW continued on with The Originals (0.3) and Reign (hoping to hold onto 0.3 for the first time this season), and both will have more new episodes deep into June.

FINALS UPDATE: Shark Tank (0.9) and 48 Hours: NCIS (0.7) adjusted up while The Originals (0.3) and Reign (0.2) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC's Shark Tank (0.8) finished out another season in weirdly dreadful fashion, falling two tenths behind its previous season low. It can blame its surroundings to some degree, as The Toy Box fell to a new low 0.5 while 20/20 (0.6) was at its lowest mark since Thanksgiving weekend.
  • ABC's loss was CBS' gain, as the Hawaii Five-0 finale (1.0) was on the upswing. It had some help from a recharged (and celebrity-themed) Undercover Boss (0.9). The network then tried another episode of newsmagazine 48 Hours: NCIS (0.6) at 10/9c.
  • On the CW, The Originals (0.4) and Reign (0.3) were bigger than usual in the prelims, but often that means preemptions...
  • And NBC was even with First Dates (0.7) and Dateline (0.8) while Fox stayed in repeat mode (0.3/0.3).

FINALS UPDATE: Blue Bloods (1.0) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC's Shark Tank (1.0) and 20/20 (0.9) returned from a week off, with Tank matching last time and the only broadcast show to break a preliminary 1.0. They led out of yet another 0.6 from The Toy Box.
  • On CBS, it was finale night for Blue Bloods (0.9), and it got back a tenth after last week's brutal drop. Hawaii Five-0 (0.9) was even and Undercover Boss (0.7) was down a notch in its second Friday airing.
  • The CW's The Originals (0.3) and Reign (0.2) as well as NBC's First Dates (0.7) and Dateline (0.8/0.9) were close to even. And with Rosewood wrapped, Fox went full repeat as Lucifer (0.3) joined Lethal Weapon (0.4).

Spotted Ratings, Friday 4/28/17

WHAT MATTERS:
  • A classic CBS Friday trio was reunited as Undercover Boss (0.8) returned to Friday for some late-season filler duty, leading into Hawaii Five-0 (0.9) and Blue Bloods (0.8). The Boss had last been seen getting very low-1's on Wednesdays in December and January. The new lead-in did no favors to the other two dramas, which were both fractional for the first time this season.
  • On ABC, The Toy Box (0.6) teamed up with low-rated ABC News documentary Let It Fall: LA 1982-1992 (0.6).
  • Fox had the season or series finale of Rosewood (0.5), leading into another repeat of Lethal Weapon (0.4), and both shows lost a tenth from last week.
  • NBC had First Dates (0.7) and two more back-to-earth hours of Dateline (0.8), while the CW was back to new episodes with The Originals (0.3) and Reign (0.2).

Spotted Ratings, Friday 4/21/17

FINALS UPDATE: Blue Bloods (R) (0.7) and Dateline (1.1) adjusted up while The Originals (R) (0.2) and Reign (R) (0.1) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Two years after Bruce Jenner: The Interview marked a major cultural moment with a tremendous 5.2 rating, Caitlyn Jenner was back in ABC Friday primetime on 20/20, but the ratings (0.8) were pretty standard for the series. The Toy Box (0.6) and Shark Tank (1.0) were both on the downtick as well.
  • With CBS (0.7/0.6/0.6) and the CW (0.3/0.2) both in repeats on the final Friday before May sweeps, that left Rosewood (0.6) as broadcast's only scripted original of the night. After quietly pulling You the Jury earlier in the week, Fox improved its fortunes by leading out of Rosewood with a repeat of Lethal Weapon (0.5).
  • On NBC, week three of First Dates (0.7) was even, pulling ahead of Toy Box in the 8/7c hour, while Dateline (1.0) was on the upswing.

Spotted Ratings, Friday 4/14/17

FINALS UPDATE: Shark Tank (1.1) adjusted up while The Originals (0.3) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Each of last week's unscripted premieres lost a tenth in week two, leaving The Toy Box and First Dates each at 0.7 while You the Jury fell to an even more egregious 0.3.
  • A couple other shows took a Good Friday hit, with Shark Tank (1.0) down two tenths in the prelims and CBS newbie MacGyver (0.8) falling to a new low on its finale night. But CBS' Hawaii Five-0 (1.0) and Blue Bloods (1.0) along with Dateline (0.8), Rosewood (0.5) and the CW dramas (0.4/0.2) all matched last week.

Spotted Ratings, Friday 4/7/17

FINALS UPDATE: Shark Tank (1.2) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Friday broadcast TV got a lot more unscripted, as three new reality series took over for scripted hours that wrapped last week. In the 8:00 hour, it was a dead heat between ABC's The Toy Box (0.8) and NBC's First Dates (0.8). NBC can at least say that Dates came in about in line with a typical episode of the previous occupant Grimm, while Toy Box fell a tad behind what the ABC comedy hour usually does.
    • Neither show was able to provide any life to its unscripted lead-out; ABC's Shark Tank (1.1) was sharply down after over a month without an original, and NBC's Dateline (0.8) was also on the low end.
  • The loser of the bunch was Fox's You the Jury (0.4), but even it was not that much weaker than the previous scripted occupant Sleepy Hollow (which got to 0.4 three times in March). Rosewood hung at last week's 0.5 low.
  • CBS stayed all scripted and pulled into the Friday lead with MacGyver (0.9), Hawaii Five-0 (1.0) and a downticking Blue Bloods (1.0). And the CW's The Originals will hope to hold onto its preliminary 0.4 this time after adjusting down last week, while Reign stuck at 0.2.

FINALS UPDATE: Last Man Standing (1.1) adjusted up while The Originals (0.3) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • On a night full of finales for broadcast TV, the highest-rated one was ABC's veteran comedy Last Man Standing (1.0), matching last week. But its lead-out Dr. Ken (0.7) did not leave a positive final impression, inching down to a new series low. ABC then had yet another Shark Tank repeat (0.7), as the show prepares a return to originals next week alongside newbie The Toy Box. 20/20 (0.8) rounded out the night.
  • The only confirmed series finale of the bunch was Grimm (0.9), as the sixth-year NBC Friday staple ticked up to tie its season high. It led into two hours of Dateline (0.9/1.0).
  • Fox was also in finale mode with the season or series finale of Sleepy Hollow (0.5), matching last week. Its lead-in Rosewood (0.5) returned to originals, but apparently the viewers couldn't tell; it matched last week's repeat and was a new low for originals.
  • CBS was back from its March Madness hiatus with MacGyver (0.9) and Hawaii Five-0 (1.0) on the downtick, but Blue Bloods (1.1) inched up at 10/9c.
  • And on the CW, the surprisingly impressive start for The Originals continued with another preliminary 0.4 in week three, leading into Reign (0.2).

FINALS UPDATE: NCAA Basketball (1.7) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • On the second Friday of CBS' March Madness hiatus (2.2/2.2/2.8), ABC comedies Last Man Standing (1.0) and Dr. Ken (0.8) along with the NBC drama Grimm (0.8) were all even, one week before they wrap for the season next week. ABC had another Shark Tank repeat (0.7) leading into 20/20 (0.7), dropping well behind Dateline (0.9/1.0) in the last two hours.
  • Fox's Sleepy Hollow was also a week out from its finale, leading out of another repeat from Rosewood. Both shows were up to 0.5 after hitting 0.4 each of the previous three Fridays.
  • And the CW's The Originals continued to impress early on in its fourth season, hitting a preliminary 0.4 this week after just barely missing out on the number last week. Reign rounded out the night with 0.2 yet again.

FINALS UPDATE: NCAA Basketball (1.3) and Dateline (0.8) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • A week after The Vampire Diaries wrapped for the series, the CW brought back spin-off The Originals (0.3) in its vacated timeslot, and it opened at the low end of TVD's results this season (as well as the low end of its own Friday results from last season). Reign had its familiar 0.2 at 9/8c.
  • On ABC, comedies Last Man Standing (1.0) and Dr. Ken (0.8) tied last week's below-average results. The network then had another two-hour Truth & Lies special (1.0/1.1), this time on the Manson family. The last special (on the Menendez brothers) had a 1.7 on a Thursday back in January.
  • NBC continued with Grimm (0.8) and two-hour Dateline (0.8/0.9), while Fox remained off the map with yet another repeat of Rosewood (0.4) leading into original Sleepy Hollow (0.4).
  • And CBS dominated the night with its first Friday of March Madness coverage (1.4/1.8/1.4).

Spotted Ratings, Friday 3/10/17

FINALS UPDATE: Blue Bloods (1.0) and Grimm (0.7) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The Vampire Diaries ended a great eight-year run with a 0.4 for a recap special in the 8/7c hour, and up just a tenth week-to-week for the series finale (0.5) at 9/8c. It still tied TVD's best rating since making the move to Friday in January 2016.
  • Crossover night did not particularly liven up CBS' MacGyver (1.0) and Hawaii Five-0 (1.1); the former was down a notch week-to-week while the latter was even. Blue Bloods came back from two weeks off and was even at 1.1.
  • On ABC, Last Man Standing (1.0) stumbled to a new season low, while Dr. Ken (0.8) was down to tie its low. Shark Tank (0.9) was in repeat mode.
  • NBC livened up a bit with Emerald City gone, as the return of two-hour Dateline (1.0/1.1) put the franchise back into the ones for the first time since January. Grimm had its familiar 0.8 at 8/7c.
  • And Fox had another miserable Friday with a second straight combo of Rosewood repeat (0.4) and Sleepy Hollow original (0.4).

FINALS UPDATE: Movie: When We Rise p4 (0.4) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • With CBS in repeats, ABC's Shark Tank (1.4) was the only non-fractional program on broadcast, and matched last week's season high in a special 8/7c airing. It led into the last two hours of When We Rise (0.5/0.4), which roughly matched the Thursday telecast.
  • It was finale night for Emerald City (0.7), which was up a tenth after a string of 0.6's through the second half of its order. It was sandwiched by steady Grimm (0.8) and Dateline (0.8).
  • The CBS dramas (0.7/0.8/0.7) as well as Fox's Rosewood (0.4) were all in repeats, and that helped usher an original of Sleepy Hollow to a new low 0.4.
  • A week before its series finale, The Vampire Diaries stayed at 0.4, leading into another 0.2 from Reign.

FINALS UPDATE: Last Man Standing (1.2) and Shark Tank (1.4) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC's Shark Tank (1.3) and Shark Tank-themed 20/20 (1.0) both upticked as the show passed the much-promoted $100 million in deals milestone. Earlier in the night, Last Man Standing (1.1) will hope for a second straight upward finals adjustment to match last week, while Dr. Ken (0.9) bounced back from last week's low.
  • We've seen the best and the worst of MacGyver in the last two weeks, and this week (1.1) it was back to the middle of that range. Hawaii Five-0 (1.1) inched down and Blue Bloods (0.8) was a repeat.
  • The other three networks were steady across the board: NBC with Grimm (0.8) / Emerald City (0.6) / Dateline (0.8), Fox with Rosewood (0.6) and Sleepy Hollow (0.5), and the CW with The Vampire Diaries (0.4) and Reign (0.2).

FINALS UPDATE: Last Man Standing (1.2), Shark Tank (1.2) and Hawaii Five-0 (1.2) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • A week after some of their strongest results of the season, the CBS dramas swung all the way back in the other direction, starting with MacGyver (0.9) dropping into the zeroes for just the second time. Hawaii Five-0 (1.1) and Blue Bloods (1.1) were also below average.
  • It was also a down night for ABC, as Last Man Standing (1.1), Dr. Ken (0.8) and Shark Tank (1.1) all fell to numbers they hadn't seen since the fall. (Though unlike the CBS shows, they saw these numbers pretty frequently during the fall.) At 10/9c, 20/20 (0.9) held off a Making a Murderer-themed Dateline (0.8) for second place.
  • The other networks trailed as usual but were steadier. NBC's Grimm (0.8) bounced back from last week's low and pulled back ahead of Rosewood (0.6) on Fox. At 9/8c, Emerald City (0.6) and Sleepy Hollow (0.5) were both even again. And the CW matched last week with The Vampire Diaries (0.4) and Reign (0.2).

Spotted Ratings, Friday 2/10/17

WHAT MATTERS:
  • It was a big night for the CBS dramas, with MacGyver (1.2) and Hawaii Five-0 (1.3) each up two tenths to tie their highest ratings since the new year. Blue Bloods (1.2) was up a tenth at 10/9c.
  • The CW brought back Reign (0.2) for its final season, where it may well be poised to peel off a long run of 0.2's just like previous occupant Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. It led out of The Vampire Diaries, which preliminarily ticked up to 0.4.
  • ABC's comedies sat out in favor of an hour of Peanuts Valentine's specials (1.0), leading into a steady Shark Tank (1.3) and narrowly down 20/20 (0.9).
  • The other two networks stayed low, though Rosewood (0.7) picked up a tenth to tie a downticking Grimm (0.7) for third at 8/7c. Emerald City (0.6) and Sleepy Hollow (0.5) stayed even at 9/8c.

Spotted Ratings, Friday 2/3/17

FINALS UPDATE: Dateline (0.8) adjusted up while Blue Bloods (1.1) and The Vampire Diaries (0.3) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The CBS drama trio was back together for the first time in three weeks, with MacGyver (1.0), Hawaii Five-0 (1.1) and Blue Bloods (1.2) all down a tenth from that night. (However, Five-0 was up a tenth from two weeks ago, when it had a low-rated Trump special as a lead-in.)
  • On ABC, another 1.2 from Last Man Standing led into slightly down Dr. Ken (0.9) and Shark Tank (1.3) and an upswinging 20/20 (1.0).
  • NBC's Grimm (0.8) and Emerald City (0.6) were both steady, but Dateline (0.7) dropped well behind 20/20.
  • Fox's Sleepy Hollow was back down to 0.5 after last week's uptick, leading out of a third straight 0.6 from Rosewood.
  • And The Vampire Diaries was up to 0.4, while Crazy Ex-Girlfriend wrapped up season two and made it 13 in a row at 0.2.
