The Breakdown: CBS Monday in 2019-20 (The Neighborhood, Bob Hearts Abishola, All Rise and more!)

It's time for a journey through the CBS Monday schedule in 2019-20...

NOTE: In addition to classic A18-49+, Breakdown posts in 2019-20 also use CVPlus, comparing spring ratings against a higher league average due to viewership inflation from COVID-19 stay-at-home orders. See here for more.

Keeping The Neighborhood and Bull around as relatively steady bookends, CBS replaced its 8:30 and 9:00 newbies with a couple new ones and had a mixed start. Bob Hearts Abishola was an improvement on last year's Happy Together, while All Rise fell short of the already mediocre standard from last year's Magnum P.I.

The story changed a bit for the first two hours in the winter, as The Neighborhood got nothing like the big winter bounce it saw in its rookie season. All Rise narrowed the gap with Magnum a little, shaking off a 0.54 in the first week of the winter and hovering around 0.60 in future weeks.

The same four shows looked best in the spring, with the comedies faring well during the pandemic viewing inflation, while All Rise stacked up favorably against year-ago flop The Code and helped Bull a bit as well.

The Neighborhood: It was a nice but fairly uninspiring second season. Held up well in the fall after a slow start, had a disappointing lack of winter bounce but a pretty good COVID bounce. Adds up to a slightly weaker show than in season one. Grade: B-.

Bob Hearts Abishola: Most years, this would not be one of the biggest newbie successes of the season, but here we are. It did fine, definitely a step up from last year's Happy Together, and was certainly a reasonable renewal. Grade: B-.

All Rise: It rallied a little bit after some very rough-looking results in the late fall and early winter, but there was little DVR interest and overall this was decidedly weaker than the already mediocre year-ago occupant Magnum P.I. A pretty shaky renewal for CBS, along the lines of season one of God Friended Me. Grade: C-.

Bull: After small declines through most of the season, a nice spring showing almost got it back to even in Plus. I could see going with a B here but it fared a little worse in the DVR numbers than in the Live+SD ones so I'll round out a heavy B-minus evening for the eye. Grade: B-.
