Schedule Five-Spot, WE 3/11/12 - Terra Nova, The Star Next Door, Justified, Duets, America's Got Talent

Here's the Schedule Five-Spot for the week ending March 11, 2012:

Terra Nova - The buzziest news of the week had to be Fox's cancellation of Terra Nova. I asked when evaluating its first two weeks whether this was a show that needed to be a big hit to survive. Though the show did drop a lot from the 3.1 demo of those first two weeks, I still think that was probably close to the truth. Later in the week, Netflix "eyed" a pickup of the show. My advice: treat that as what it is - a long shot - and be pleasantly surprised if it happens.

Ratings Five-Spot, WE 1/22/12 - Alcatraz, Justified, Royal Pains, Archer, Grimm

This week's Ratings Five-Spot at SpoilerTV has one "spot" for each of the first five days of the week. We visit Monday's Alcatraz premiere, Tuesday's cable drama smackdown between Justified, White Collar and Southland, Wednesday's soft Royal Pains premiere, Thursday's Archer/Unsupervised block and Friday's big upswings from Chuck and Grimm. Check it out!

The Five-Spots are my recaps of what aired, what got renewed/cancelled and what rated well or poorly last week in TV. For more Five-Spots, see the Index.

Schedule Five-Spot, WE 12/4/11 - Grimm, Touch, Breaking In, Justified, Army Wives

Didn't do one of these for the short Thanksgiving week, but I'm bringing over the one significant piece of news from that week (the Grimm full season) and trying to squeeze that, a Fox midseason announcement and lots of cable news into one Five-Spot. Good luck to me! Here's the Sked Five-Spot for the week ending 12/4/11:

Grimm - The full season is certainly good news for Grimm, but it doesn't really even cancel out the horrible news from the previous week that it'll stay on Friday. As I said last week in the Power Rankings, I think the low viewing levels of Friday will eventually wear down this kind of show. Fringe and Dollhouse also had promising Friday night starts but eventually lost huge chunks of that initial audience. I'll be watching its Thursday ratings with great interest this week.

Scheduling Five-Spot, WE 4/3/11 - Amazing Race/Undercover Boss, Justified/Archer, Mad Men, Off Their Rockers, Mobbed

Didn't get the last two Five-Spots done last week due to health issues. Slowly getting back to full speed, and should definitely have a full trio this week with a lot going on. Here's your Scheduling Five-Spot for the week ending April 3, 2011:

The Amazing Race/Undercover Boss - CBS has renewed reality properties The Amazing Race and Undercover Boss for next season. The Race has been on Sunday nights for over five years now, but it was last year's breakout performance of Boss post-Super Bowl (along with this season's move of CSI: Miami to the evening) that finally got CBS back in the mix on previously troublesome Sunday. Race has been off to a rough start this spring, averaging just a 2.7 demo, but it's on the upswing. Boss's 2010-11 eps have averaged a 3.2 demo, down from last year but still rock solid.

Opinion Five-Spot, WE 3/6/11 - The Chicago Code, Justified, America's Next Great Restaurant, Breakout Kings, The Event

Here's my Opinion Five-Spot for the week ending March 6, 2011:

The Chicago Code - Haven't seen this week's episode yet, just going by last week's, but I think my verdict on this show is that it is pretty compelling when Delroy Lindo is on the screen and relatively run-of-the-mill when he isn't. Alderman Gibbons is definitely one of TV's best villains of the moment, in part because I just want to find out what the deal is with him. That guy alone has me still watching. Jason Clarke and Jennifer Beals are better than I thought they'd be before the show began, but still nothing amazing.

Opinion Five-Spot, WE 2/13/11 - Traffic Light, Parenthood, Mr. Sunshine, Justified, Mad Love

Here's my Opinion Five-Spot for the week ending February 13, 2011:

Traffic Light - If there were a shade of blue between the "meh" and this "good," that's what I'd give Traffic Light. Maybe it was the low expectations (as the premise is just as generic as the other umpteen relationship shows premiering this season), maybe it was the Office guest stars playing two of the lead male roles, but I kinda detected a low-key Office sensibility here. Needs to get funnier, but I definitely saw a pretty decent foundation. Nice to see David Denman playing something other than a dunderhead romantic foil.
