2018 Upfront Questions: CBS

Part two of the upfront preview is the SCHEDULE-centric portion, examining the big-picture scheduling questions each network faces on each night in the final week before its upfront.

On each night, you can see the network's average 2017-18 ratings with its most frequent occupant in three different sub-sections of the year: "fall" (premiere week through December 31), "winter" (January 1 to the beginning of Daylight Saving Time) and "spring" (the start of DST through Thursday, May 3). You can also switch from the A18-49 ratings to the True ratings, which should make the comparisons across nights and across the season a bit more fair.

Schedules Plus Enhanced: CBS Sunday

Schedules Plus is the ultimate almanac to broadcast network primetime scheduling since 2001. It features lineups for three different parts of the year, as well as A18-49+ ratings that more fairly account for historical decline. For more on the tables and charts in Schedules Plus, see this primer.

This post covers CBS Sunday, which historically housed a regularly-scheduled movie from 9:00 to 11:00. This setup became less viable in the mid-aughts, and the network had to start putting entertainment series across the night. CBS' most successful Sunday program was The Amazing Race, which stayed in the 8:00 slot for nearly a decade, while the network has housed increasingly low-priority dramas in the later hours. See the 2025-26 Breakdown.

Schedules Plus Enhanced: CBS Friday

Schedules Plus is the ultimate almanac to broadcast network primetime scheduling since 2001. It features lineups for three different parts of the year, as well as A18-49+ ratings that more fairly account for historical decline. For more on the tables and charts in Schedules Plus, see this primer.

This post covers CBS Friday, yet another CBS lineup that was off the map at the start of the A18-49+ era. It was brought to life with the big 2005 launches of Numb3rs and Ghost Whisperer, which combined to book-end the night for a half-decade. Since their departures, the network has slowly worked its way back to that level and eventually even higher, with the one constant being the crime drama Blue Bloods. See the 2025-26 Breakdown.

Schedules Plus Enhanced: CBS Thursday

Schedules Plus is the ultimate almanac to broadcast network primetime scheduling since 2001. It features lineups for three different parts of the year, as well as A18-49+ ratings that more fairly account for historical decline. For more on the tables and charts in Schedules Plus, see this primer.

This post covers CBS Thursday. Just before the start of the A18-49+ era, CBS became a huge Thursday force by combining summer 2000 reality sensation Survivor with game-changing crime procedural CSI. They were quite competitive with the last years of NBC's Must See TV, then dominated in its immediate aftermath. The duo slipped considerably through the second half of the aughts, but CBS has stayed strong even after their departures from the night thanks to massive comedy The Big Bang Theory. See the 2025-26 Breakdown.

Schedules Plus Enhanced: CBS Wednesday

Schedules Plus is the ultimate almanac to broadcast network primetime scheduling since 2001. It features lineups for three different parts of the year, as well as A18-49+ ratings that more fairly account for historical decline. For more on the tables and charts in Schedules Plus, see this primer.

This post covers CBS Wednesday. Like CBS Tuesday, it had very little viewer interest in this night at the beginning of the A18-49+ era, but it's had an awakening as the years have passed. The first real Wednesday attraction was CSI: NY in 2004-05, and it was joined the next season by the ultimately even more lucrative Criminal Minds. In the years NY and Minds were paired, the 8:00 hour remained its usual black hole self, but even it was patched up with the big move of reality tentpole Survivor in 2010. See the 2025-26 Breakdown.

Schedules Plus Enhanced: CBS Tuesday

Schedules Plus is the ultimate almanac to broadcast network primetime scheduling since 2001. It features lineups for three different parts of the year, as well as A18-49+ ratings that more fairly account for historical decline. For more on the tables and charts in Schedules Plus, see this primer.

This post covers CBS Tuesday. CBS was barely even trying on Tuesdays at the beginning of the A18-49+ era, but the incredible rise of JAG spin-off NCIS from sub-marginal season one numbers has made the night into a network bright spot. NCIS rose in Plus throughout its first decade on air, while spin-offs or NCIS star vehicles have shored up the 9/8c hour since 2009-10, and the final hour starting in 2016.  See the 2025-26 Breakdown.

Schedules Plus Enhanced: CBS Monday

Schedules Plus is the ultimate almanac to broadcast network primetime scheduling since 2001. It features lineups for three different parts of the year, as well as A18-49+ ratings that more fairly account for historical decline. For more on the tables and charts in Schedules Plus, see this primer.

This post covers CBS Monday. This night has housed a historical two-hour comedy lineup, held up in the A18-49+ era by anchors like Everybody Loves Raymond, Two and a Half Men and How I Met Your Mother. With the departure of those shows, CBS ran away from the two-hour lineup for a couple years. Then they went back for a couple years. 2018-19 brought a return to one hour of comedy, with drama newbie Magnum P.I. taking over at 9/8c. See the 2025-26 Breakdown.
