These numbers are current through Wednesday, July 13.
WHAT MATTERS:
- The double-episode return of USA's heavily-acclaimed Mr. Robot averaged a 0.43 demo, narrowly dodging the 0.42 season low from last year and not far behind the 0.46 season premiere and finale.
- There are a couple ways of looking at this. The natural reaction is probably: "Boy, all that hype did nothing for the ratings!" The way I look at it is two-fold: first, being down 7% year-to-year is a really good trend on cable nowadays. But I'm also kinda cautious because there's a lingering possibility that the hype did do something for the ratings, and this 0.43 is actually inflated compared with what's to come. If it holds up as well post-premiere as it did last year, I think USA's gonna be pretty happy. But let's wait a week and see if that happens.
WHAT MATTERS:
- This was a light week for premieres, with my table only containing sophomore returnees Chasing Life (0.28) on ABC Family and Dominion (0.26) on Syfy. Both were down by roughly half from last week's summer premieres. (Last summer, Chasing Life had a better lead-in from Pretty Little Liars compared with this year's The Fosters. And Dominion now airs after Smackdown! on Syfy.)
- To revisit last week's potentially promising newbies: AMC's Humans is not quite so promising anymore, plummeting 40% to a 0.32 in week two. But USA's Mr. Robot (0.59) packed on a few more tenths in week three, officially putting it ahead of all USA newbie data points in the last calendar year.
Tyrant
Tuesdays, 10/9c, FX
WHAT MATTERS:
- NBC had to air an America's Got Talent repeat (1.9) on 6/24 so they could throw the original at the Rising Star premiere. The Tuesday original return on 7/1 (2.6) was even with the previous Tuesday original two weeks ago. The Night Shift (1.2) dipped by a tenth after the still strong Got Talent repeat on 6/24, which was apparently enough of a hold to score it a renewal. It then bounced back by two tenths on 7/1 (1.4).
- A couple more 0.2's were enough to get the CW's Famous in 12 the axe. Arrow repeats fill in next week.
- On cable, FX's Tyrant (0.61/0.53) had a soft start, going about 25% behind the already modest Fargo debut from a couple months ago. Even with a reasonable 13% drop in week two, it remained well behind the Fargo pace. And it's been even worse than usual in the early summer for USA's Covert Affairs (0.41/0.34), which opened at 34% behind the previous summer premiere and shed another 17% of that audience in week two. (That put it 59% behind week two of last summer!)
