Cablemetrics: Game of Thrones, Ballers, Shooter, People of Earth

These numbers are current through Monday, July 24.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Game of Thrones (4.33) took an 8% drop in its second week back on the air, exactly mimicking the week two drop from a year ago. So that kept its year-to-year trends as a blistering +18% in raw numbers.

Cablemetrics: Preacher, Power, Queen Sugar, Wrecked, Playing House

These numbers are current through Monday, June 26.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • AMC paired its sophomore drama Preacher (0.58) with Fear the Walking Dead (0.96) for a one-time preview on Sunday, then moved the show to its regular Monday timeslot with a 0.43. That 0.43 is barely half of where Preacher started its "regular" run a year ago, but still managed to match the low point from season one. That number was actually achieved early last season, before it grew to 0.5 and eventually a bunch of 0.6's late last season.

Cablemetrics: Fear the Walking Dead, The Night Of, Power, Halt and Catch Fire

These numbers are current through Monday, August 22.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • AMC's Fear the Walking Dead returned for the back half of season two with a 1.62 on Sunday. This was a double-digit step down from the show's previous series low (the 1.88 season 2A finale). It was barely half of the season two premiere (3.08) in April. And it was less than a third of the show's 4.93 series premiere, which was just one calendar year ago! But despite the increasingly negative trend, the show is still dominating the cable landscape rather easily. That's really just another testament to how incredibly far The Walking Dead mothership has separated from everything else in its space.

Cablemetrics: Cable Series vs. the Olympics, Part II

These numbers are current through Wednesday, August 17.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Most shows were on the rise against a weaker second week of Summer Olympics action. For the shows that really got slammed last week, Starz' Survivor's Remorse (0.36) and USA's Suits (0.42), there was some recovery this time, but still not all the way back to what seemed like the norm beforehand.

Cablemetrics: Power, Survivor's Remorse and more!

These numbers are current through Wednesday, August 3.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Keeping the analysis quick this week, but just wanted to note it was a very good week three for the two biggest growth stories in scripted TV. Starz' Power (0.89) rebounded by nearly a tenth from its big drop last week and tied The Haves and the Have Nots atop the scripted original cable world.
  • And Power's lead-out comedy Survivor's Remorse (0.47) was up by 0.06 to another new series high in its second week, staying in positive triple digits year-to-year. (One thing to note about Remorse is that it had a one-hour premiere last week... so it probably benefited in week two from giving the Power audience only half as much time to turn off the TV. But even if it's not "Truly" +0.06, it's still a good hold.)

Cablemetrics: Survivor's Remorse, Power, Ballers, Mr. Robot

These numbers are current through Wednesday, July 27.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Week two saw last week's big premieres of Power (0.82) on Starz and Ballers (0.62) on HBO each drop by more than 20%. Power is still crushing last year's deliveries, and may have spawned a miniature version of that growth story in comedy Survivor's Remorse (0.41). After two very quiet seasons on Saturday, never going higher than a 0.19, it opened its Sunday career by more than doubling that high point (and more than tripling the 0.12 season two premiere).

Cablemetrics: Power, Ballers, Vice Principals, The Night Of, Mr. Robot

These numbers are current through Wednesday, July 20.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • This week's big story is the incredible rise of the Starz drama Power. In its first ever Sunday episode, it smashed through cable's recent 1.0 glass ceiling, opening season three with a 1.10 and absolutely dominating a head-to-head three-way with dramas on HBO and Showtime. For Power, it's a new series high by more than four tenths, and 80% above its last premiere. This is pretty crazy considering season two was already about 80% bigger than season one. It's quite a growth story from 0.3ish ratings as late as midway through its first season.
    • Power often draws comparisons to the Fox megahit Empire. One of the many secrets to Empire's success is its huge appeal within both genders, and you can kinda see that in play with Power as well. The show skews much more female than most of the staple cable dramas, but also a lot more male than potentially comparable dramas like ABC's TGIT soaps. (Or maybe the cable equivalent would be the OWN dramas.)

Spotted Ratings, Weekend Roundup 8/1-8/2/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The CW rounded out a magical week with the revival of former PAX and MyNetworkTV series Masters of Illusion (0.3), which did OK business at 8/7c. The network then got great mileage out of a Penn and Teller: Fool Us encore (0.4) at 9/8c. It seems a bit unfortunate that this lineup got relegated to Friday while repeats of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals have regularly hung 0.1's on Thursday.
  • On Saturday, the two-hour Crossbones burn-off (0.2/0.2) was the only broadcast original (while news-themed programming vastly improved the slot it left behind on Friday), but cable had better luck as AMC's Hell on Wheels (0.47) came back nearly even year-to-year and Starz had a rather solid start out of Power (0.52).
